Problems with my SS conversion

Recommended Posts

I finally got my truck back after almost 3 months in the shop and overall it looks great but I have a problem; my 22's won't fit! It looks to me like they installed the front bumper too far back because my snow wheels that are on 20's barely fit. Could I get some close up straight on shots from the sides of some one's stock SS with 22's? I'd like to see the clearance between the bumper and the tire as well as how far out the bumper should be sticking out front.

Something that has me equally worried is that I installed a K&N FIPK air intake on it before and it fit without cutting the tube shorter or notching out the fan shroud to make it fit. The shop had to take a pretty big notch out of the shroud this time so I'm wondering what else could be wrong with the repairs.

Lastly they used a chromed stock piece that runs through the middle of the grill where the emblem attaches and it is supposed to be paint matched correct?

Thanks guys,

Chris

Ok, here are some pics.

With the wheel turned the 20's are millimeters away from the front bumper and the 22's hit the second I turn the wheel even slightly.

The center piece seems to be off to me. Sticks out too far and sits closer to the bottom than the top.

There is still bumper cover going back under the lights and grill. On other SS's does the cover end even with the outer edges of the lights etc? This difference may account for hitting the 22's.

You and me both. I'm thinking/hoping maybe the fan shroud is bigger than before but not holding my breath. With the amount of reconstruction my baby required I'm a little worried they screwed up big time of some measurements.

was there any frame damage if so id be guessing there still is. shouldnt have to cut a fan shroud that fit before the wreck. look for places in the frame called crush zones. see if any are colapsed or compressed some making it hard to fit parts on corectly. just a guess off the top of my head without seeing the truck in person anyway.

It did have some minor frame damage on the front passenger side frame rail where it connected to the bumper but that was repaired. (the attached picture shows the drivers side end of the frame rail as an illustration of what the passenger side one looks like)

They had it up on the frame machine for a couple of days with the lasers and everything checking it out and both my insurance guy and body shop guys were crawling over every inch of the frame for days making sure there was nothing else.

Called my body guy tonight and I'm taking it back in tomorrow. Made a long list of every little thing cause it should be perfect after almost $12,000 in repairs!

Dropped it off again today. Yesterday was the 3 month anniversary of my crash so it suck to send it back but he agreed something ain't right and they will fix it. This time they have all 4 22's to put on it. They'll also re-do the grill.

I think the grille ends are not snapped into place, the front bumper looks to be tiltled down in the front (causing the botom side corners to hit the tires), and as far as the cold air kit goes, I think the radiator support is misaligned or the frame is bent.....

Body guy called yesterday. The bumper was not out far enough. Guess they forgot a spacer or something so my 22's fit fine now.

The fan housing is bigger than came stock in '04, guess there was a slight re-design for better air flow, so that's why the notch.

They re-did the grill and it now looks right and is paint matched.

Now they have to re-do the flames on the hood cause some muffed the powder before it dried and looked bad in one spot so I should have it back by Wednesday or Thursday. Thanks for the help guys. Citing this site made my body guy not even hesitate to get things right since it's a conversion not a straight repair to factory.

Now I think I need to lower it...and find a frickin' 20" cheep spare. I'm tired of monkeying with the that when I swap out wheels for snow and rough weather in the mountains.
