fox_forma
Well I came out today and saw I have a nice crack in the center of my windshield. Its kinda shaped like a ? and looks like it extends to the bottom of the windshield from a little lower then center. I cant exactly tell where the impact point was or anything as I don't see any chips or anything that has a spider web type mark. Its just cracked, you cant feel it either. Apparently this is very common in AZ but since I just moved out here I still have my PA tags and my insurance is still back home since it was already paid for the rest of the year. I'm trying to get this thing fixed ASAP so it doesn't get worse and with the heat here I'm assuming thats all that will happen. When people come out and fix it how noticeable is the repaired area after its fixed? How do I go about finding a decent place to fix the windshield? I looked in the yellow pages but didn't really see anything for repairing windshields, maybe I was just looking in the wrong spot. Last, any idea on general $$$$ its going to cost either replacing it or just repairing it. The cheaper the better as right now I don't have as much money as I would like to. :banghead:

Fireman31
How far does the crack extend, 2 inches plus? By what you are describing it doesn't sound like you can repair the existing window. Small star cracks and puck marks are usually fixable. A new windshield should run in the neighborhood of $250-300 installed. FYI, warm weather really doesn't make a crack worse, cold does. Your best bet would be trying a national auto glass company like Safelite to replace the window. fox_forma
the crack def extends more than 2". I was reading some past threads and it seems to be up in the air to repair it or just replace it. Truthfully I dont have the money right this second to replace the whole thing. But something has to be done obviously. I would also like to just repair as my inspection stickers are still on the windshield and since everything is still registered and insured in PA and I am in AZ so the stickers will be gone after a replacement. Big O
Seems like around here replaced glass is never the same as the original. They break easier and some have complained about leaking edges. If you lived in my climate I would suggest waiting until the spring, let all the winter freeze thaw and rock chips from the road beat up your old glass. Then replace it with new shiney clean glass in the spring. Tough break man, I HATE cracked glass.
KJT13
I've always had mine replaced. The only time I ever had a problem with replacement glass was on my 96 Z71. There was a spot weld that had to be ground down about 3 inches from the lower corner on the driver's side. I found this out after the 4th replacement cracked in the same spot as the previous 3. Fortunately, glass is covered here in Mass as part of the comprehensive insurance. I think we can get up to 6 replacements per year. On the way to the NJ meet last week, I was changing lanes and a rock flew up and crack the top corner on the driver's side. The star is about the size of a quarter with a dime attached. Sucks. Happened in CT and pissed me off for a good half hour.

I have had a small star crack in my line of sight ever since. It hasn't spread luckily even with some late winter freezes afterwards......I don't plan on replacing the windshield unless it gets worse, I am used to it being there. fox_forma
my insurance doesn't cover it without using my deductible which is more than the windshield itself. Guess I am going to go check with the safelite guys to see what kind of glass they use. I have read mixed reviews on their work, some say the glass is shit and others say they got OEM glass installed. i guess it depends on the shop. Luckily here in AZ where I'm at it wont be getting cold anytime soon but its just annoying to have right in my line of sight so I am going to try and get it replaced ASAP. I wish I knew where the hell it came from though, it sure wasnt there the other night and then it appears and its big.
