Leaves and twigs and stuff get down in there from the cowl area, under the hood, and down from the top of the fender. Then rain gets in there and makes "mud" out of it. I found it by accident, but now I keep it clean regularly, especially in fall. Good tip, and reminder. Oh, and welcome to the site too. I see that's your first post!
