I have not seen it, but heard it is much better than Transformers 2. Dont know how you can really compare the 2, but that says alot imo. Itll be interesting to see which movie generates more money.

I'd give District 9 a D+. The story had too many holes in my opinion. It was also somewhat anti-climactic at the end.

I thought the speacial effects, computer animation was top notch on the other hand.

For those of you who hated the movie Cloverfield, you will not like this film.

i saw it last weekend , pretty good . makes you think alot of how it relates to current situations . worth seeing i thought.

from the previews it looks like a much different, more original alien movie than we have ever seen.

Saw it last night with my fiance. We were both iffy on it. I'd say C+. Graphics are great, the actors ok. Its not as cheesy as Independence Day and certainly not as predictable. However, I think it could have been much better, the ending was not thrilling like mentioned above. However, it is left open for a sequel. I would say the first 40 minutes were 100 times better than the last 40 minutes. I think its rated at 113min long. I'm still 50/50 on it. I did like it better than independence day or likewise movies because it does have political and social overtones Africa and the UN are facing today and the story line is better than most other alien movies. It highlights and touches on some common myths in African society as well. It also touches on some of the atrocities governments might be capable of in respect to "human" rights.

Direct from the yahoo! movies website...

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them.

Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare -- they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.

The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable -- he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

I saw it last week. I liked the storyline, something different besides the "wise peaceful aliens, come to earth to solve all our problems" or the "malevolent aliens, here to blow us up" routines that have been done too many times. I also liked the way it moved the center of action away from the usual places, and used South Africa (home town for the director). I think that helped with the “News at Five” documentary feeling, since it was someplace distant and different than the overused locations of Hollywood or New York. There are some holes in the plot and I am sure they could be explained away, but they do leave you wondering. I liked the fairly believable alien technology. With the exception of the ‘anti-gravity beam’, the movie avoided the cliché special effects ‘magic’ force fields and such.

On the down side, it was very violent and gory, but I am sure that was intended. I also found the metamorphosis (and reversible at that) a bit hard to swallow. But as a plot device to get the main character to go from oppressor to oppressed it was good.

The “shaky cam” used to give it a documentary feel was overdone in a few spots and was downright annoying in the office interview of the main character. No interview cameraman worth his wage would be that bad. Even in the third world.
