Possibly Cross Threaded A Header Bolt Hole

Recommended Posts

banghead.gif So i was installing my pacesetter lts today on the ss and surprisingly everything was going smooth( a little too smooth). The passenger side bolted up easily and the driver side was also rather easy until it came time to tighten the final bolt (the one closest to the wall). It went in about 3/4 of the way and suddenly got too hard to tighten. Took it to the muffler guy and told him i had possibly cross threaded it and he just advised me too add a washerfreak3.gif. Um, i don't think that would be a permanent or wise solution. So now i'm thinking i should go see a more experienced mechanic. Drive to the machine shop and the guy doesn't even bother to look at it just tells me that i am most likely right and that i can just tap it myself (wtf). So the question now is how difficult would it be for me to tap it myself and can i do serious damage if i don't do it just right? Should i leave this to a professional? Thanks.

well first of all did you take the bolt out and see if the threads are f*cked can you look in the hole and see what the threads look like and did you try and get it started the right away again? if not a tap isnt to hard to use but make sure you use the right size and get a quality tap no cheap junk.

The threads on the bolt seem fine for the most part. I cant really get my head in their to take a look inside the bolt hole it's hard enough getting my hand and wrench in their to tighten and loosen the bolt. It's the one closest to the wall and a real pain in the ass. I did take it out and try to get it in the right way but it just wont go in. Not familiar with taps at all so what would be considered junkconfused.gif Would it be possible to start the tap through the header bolt flange hole as sort of a guide? Thanks for the quick replythumbsup.gif

Did you use anti-seize when installing the bolts? Sounds like you had a bit of trash in the hole before you started wrenching on it. Tapping a hole is really easy, but its not like running a bolt in. You have to slowly cut the threads or clean them screwing it in and out one threead at a time. Make sure you use a air blower to blow the hole out. Start using anti-seize on anything thats aluminum.
