Diffrence In Lq4 And Lq9

Same block but LQ9 has high compression coated flat-top pistons better for an N/A setup and the LQ4 has lower compression circular uncoated pistons and is better if your going to boost it. All I know of. Im sure someone here will be able to name some more tho.

the lq9 is a ''true'' roller rocker engine as well and the lq4 has roller rockers on top only

 

Explain? Both engines use roller lifters and non-roller tipped rocker arms. Both use the same heads, rockers, lifters, heads, even cams (99-00' LQ4 slightly different). The LQ9 has the higher compression pistons and stronger connecting rods compared to early LQ4's. Also the 99-00' 6.0's had a "longer" crankshaft that didn't require a spacer to run with a 4L80 trans, the 01'+ used a space between the rear face of the crankshaft and the flexplate to adapt to the 4L80E or sans spacer to bolt right up to a 60/65e trans. LQ9's have a floating pistons/rod combo where the LQ4 uses a press fit wrist pin.

:withstupid: The only way to tell them apart is to pul the engine apart and look at te pistons.

i might be wrong but thats what ive been told, the flat top pistons give an extra 10 hp, so i would think 35 hp with the true roller rockers.... or does anyone else know where this 35hp is coming from? :dunno:

The LQ4 ratings were anywhere from 300hp in the 2500/3500 series trucks to as high as 335hp in the 2006 Yukon Denali's.

 

As stated earlier, yes there are some mechanical differences between the earlier model LQ4's and LQ9 that are beefier components such as the rods and flat-top pistons with coated skirts and floating pins, but other than 6-tenths higher compression there are no mechanical differences to account for the large disparity in power ratings other than exhaust, tuning and the basic desire to keep the engines appearing different between the models. The coated piston skirts and stronger rods with floating piston pins as used in the LQ9/LS2 engines were later added to the LQ4’s as well, making the differences even more minor.
