haha :blahblah:

pure assumption here: awd models got the aluminum and 2wd got the 2 peice steel? would there be a benefit to switching to a 1 peice aluminum other than weight.

and yes u-joints are different and same with slip yoke (already knew that)

You got er! Awd 1 piece 2wd 2 piece. Not sure about switching them.

Wouldnt be as easy as just switching them. The 1 piece from the AWD trucks would be too short due to the added length off the transmission from the transfer case. You could probably have an aluminum one made just by measuring the length overall that you need but going from the two piece to a one piece shaft you'll more than likely throw off your pinion angle enough to have to shim it. Would it be worth it to swap to a one piece aluminum over the stock two piece...probably not IMO.

I asked same question on pt.net a while back and a couple of guys over there said it would be difficult to balance a driveshaft that long. I have no idea if they knew what they were talking about. I was thinking if I ever went to a 4l80 I might give it a try.

i had a 2000 2500 and it had a 1 piece aluminum and it was the same, ext cab short bed just like the ss. if i was thinking of switching, id either have a carbon one made of pull one out of a 2wd 2500 of hd so only the slip yoke hd to be changed.

Found this it says you can save 35+ pounds going from 2 pc steel to 1 aluminum. Also says the longest they will go is 86 inches and just looking at my 2 drive shafts without crawling under there to measure, I think it might be close.
