Thatdavidkid
I'm getting an engine in trade for some labor and I'm wondering how I can tell which it is, the guy can't tell me for sure which it is. I'm hoping to figure it out without opening the engine up. I'll be changing the oil pan but other than that its going in as is.
JC03SS
I'm pretty sure it's stamped on the block somewhere I might be wrong tho. Look it over really close.
Thatdavidkid
He said it has 4.8/5.3 stamped in the block. I don't care what it is I'm still gonna use it I'd just like to know which.
battousai
Do you have the Vin of the vehicle it came off of? That's the only way to really tell... They are the same block with different stroke lengths Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Thatdavidkid
So there should be a casting number on the crank somewhere. But the injectors and all that crap are the same?
chawkins6789
Look through a spark plug hole, Dished piston is 5.3, Flat higher compression piston is the 4.
chpspecial
Best way is to measure the stroke. There are a few 5.3 with flat top pistons. Usually in an aluminum block though. Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
chawkins6789
The only 5.3's I have heard of with flat top piston's were aluminum. I just gave the easiest way with out dismantling the engine Edited July 2, 2013 by chawkins6789 (see edit history)
Thatdavidkid
Nice, that's more like what I was looking for... It's an 01-04 ish truck motor, so it won't be a flat top 5.3 I don't think assuming the flat top 5.3's are just about all aluminum.
Thatdavidkid
I'll do that, and then check stroke to double check before I install but at least this way I have a solid idea when I get the engine.
chawkins6789
If it is 01-04 it will be a 4.8 if it has flat top pistons. the HO L33 aluminum 5.3 with aluminum block didn't come until 2006
