MCMarshall
I have a 2003 SS with the 4L65E and I've lost 2nd and 4th gear! The fluid smells normal and looks normal. I started to go for a drive and it shifted 1st through 3rd but wouldn't shift into 4th so I stopped to check it out and then pulled back out and it wouldn't go into 2nd and had to let off the gas and it shifted to 3rd! Any idea's?
Blown 346
Could be a shift solenoid, if there is no slipping and it just doesnt want to shift. Do you have any codes? otherwise a trans shop would have to look at it either way.
MCMarshall
the Check engine light is off and it acts like it shifts into 4th when you let off the gas and let it coast, but as soon as I touch the gas it goes right back into 3rd! It hasn't been running hot or shifting hard at all. Edited October 7, 2013 by MCMarshall (see edit history)

MCMarshall
Great any idea how much that'll cost for parts? I've got a transmission builder I just haven't got to talk to him yet.
canadianVRss
the parts will be cheap. the labor won't be. the trans has to be pulled. talk to your builder about what he wants price wise and make sure he knows what he's doing. a 65E will hold..... if built and tuned correctly. MCMarshall
He's a buddy of mine and he's rebuilt 1000's of automatics in the 30 years he's been doing it. The labor shouldn't cost much because I can remove and install it, and he's cheap if he like's you! lol Any suggestions on any mods I should do to beef it up some? I drive it daily and pull a 27ft camper and bass boat pretty often.
1BAD2K
Just buy a 4l80e. You'll never have a problem again if you get a good one.
MCMarshall
I've got 190,000 on this transmission and it's only going to cost me $200 for the parts and labor. So I'm going to stick with the stock one.

MCMarshall
The parts only cost me $34.59 and he's only charging me $80 to do the work. But I ended up having to have someone take it out for me because I messed my wrists up and that cost $200 for taking it out and putting it back in and another $80 for the transmission fluid. so it all totaled up to $402 for everything! And the reason he's doing it so cheap is because he's a good buddy of mine and he's also best friend's with my father-in-law.
