  1. A long time ago I was told that drilled & vented rotors crack because the holes cannot be stress relieved in the vented area.

Not just on Baer rotors but on ALL drilled rotors. It's not a problem on race cars because those rotors are replaced frequently.

Porsche rotors (and probably other exotics) are an exception because the holes are cast and not drilled.

  2. OK, here's the "hertiage". The first production SS was in 1961 as an option package on the Impala. Basically it was trim, wheel covers, bucket seats, and badges. I know for a fact that in '62, the basic (around 195 HP) 283 was the base V8, with manual or 2-speed Powerglide. My dad had a '66 Impala SS, 283 / Powerglide. The first Chevy II Nova SS ('63 I think) came with a straight 6 base engine. Same I believe with the '64 & '65 Chevelle SS. The SS label GREW into the reputation it has now, with cars like the 396 Chevelle, the early 409 Impala SS, etc. Bigger engines were options, though, not standard. Style was first, then the performance was added. So I agree that it is basically a marketing tool, but it has a reputation that has grown over the years. There have been a lot of special SS's, but not all of them were. :chevy:

I was just typing something to this effect.

Yes, the SS option was an appearance package on most 60's Chevys.

The big, honkin' V8 was an option. There were also some 4 door SS's.

  3. Thanks for all the birthday wishes!

I was planning to pull the broken transmission out of my Impala SS on Sunday but got a better offer.

My brother Chris and I participated in a Fall Color Tour in my original 1929 Ford.

It was a very nice event with over 80 vehicles on the tour.

I'm happy to say we went over 200 miles and didn't break anything.

It was a much more successful weekend than the previous one.

  4. So how many cubic inches will the truck be next year? More than 364? :fingersx:

Right now I'm thinking it won't be much larger, only enough to clean up the cylinders.

I believe my Rotrex is about maxed out with only 364 cubes.

Thanks Ray! I look forward to seeing the 'burban in it's current state.

  5. Theres going to be a lot of cleaning to get the engine bay back to how insanely clean it was before.

I don't think it will be a problem returning to an even greater level of insanity.

There are areas I cannot reach with the engine in the way.

Cleaning and engine building - isn't that what the off-season is for?

Well glad to see you made it back ok Stewart, Krystle was worried when I told her what happened.

TJ, Please tell Krystle I'm fine and I appreciate her concern.

I'm happy to hear she made it home alright after her long drive.

The truck made it home in 5th at a steady 2000 RPM (55 MPH).
