  1. ... Im almost afraid Im going to blow my tranny out when I have maxxed out the pedal...

You have very good reason to - my truck with tune, TCS-2800, CAI, factory manifolds, & Corsa catback grenaded the output shaft on a 1-2 shift. And that was I think on it's 3rd build. I did not increase engine torque until I felt I had conquered the trans issues.

  2. LOL. Find this out personally?

Yeah I live in a "target-rich environment!" Where I live there is a very large round-about flanked by a HP campus, SMU, PepsiCo, Dr Pepper/Snapple, etc and I have to drive through that roundabout to/from work. So lots of DD exotic cars. During rush-hour I was following a nicely-kept Caymen S and he tried to break away from me at the stoplight and loose me in the roundabout, I knew he wouldn't build up enough MPH to get away from the truck on the 1/8-mile straight leading to the roundabout but I fully expected to loose him in the long bending turn. The intersection at the stoplight we started from is very rough, because of that I am in the morning habit of purposely engaging T/H in that spot so the truck will not shift into 2nd until I have passed over all the rough pavement in the middle of the intersection - (back to the story) after the Porche clears the rough middle of the intersection all of a sudden the driver just *mats it* and he's off like a dart, and I threw my toe into the gas pedal; I was still in first gear at about 3500-rpm = the truck just jumped out of it's own skin and reeled him back in, we entered the roundabout bumper-to-bumper. We both had to go 2/3rds of the way through the roundabout, imagine a good 1000-ft left-hand bender and he never shook me, I looked down at the speedo and we were going 55+ mph! The truck was moderately out of composure and understeering but I was still in my lane, the Hotchkiss bars and new tires did better than I expected!

... Someone I know worked at a Porsche dealer and always said it would kick my trucks arse through corners, take offs etc. But just give the SS some mods and say buh bye foreigner...

:withstupid: Well in all fairness the truck isn't a supercar, but it does better than one would expect.

I've already lined-up my next goal - an attorney in my office building has a silver Ferarri 458 Italia as his DD. But that might be taking on a lot more than the truck can handle lol.

  3. I run ARH & Corsa Touring and love it; the truck is no louder than stock at idle, but definitely 'uncorked' when at WOT - after I added the blower the WOT volume outside the truck became loud. as. f**k. No joke, you can hear the truck WOT 3/4 mile away; with the Corsa Sport I have heard BroBrad's truck during on-the-road testing over a mile away. But normal street driving the Corsa sounds just the same as before the header install, the ARH just 'magnifies' the WOT volume lol. The only exhaust I have heard that is louder are the SLP Loudmouth setups for the late-model Mustangs. You definitely want the 3" collectors though.

  4. Just put a set on the truck this last weekend, and like them a lot; I was running Pirelli Scorpion Zero A and the Yokohamas ride far better and grip is same or better than the Pirellis. Good tire, especially for the price. Time will tell how well they wear.

  5. You can get a GOOD 3-piece GM OE tonneau cover from gasemall for *dirt cheap*; that will get you +1 mpg at speeds over 40 MPH. Get a good tune in the truck, that will gain you efficiency everywhere. Run a good tune on premium gas, even though the fuel is $.20 more per gallon if you can get 20-MPG @ $3.79/gal it will be 11% cheaper than 17-MPG @ $3.59/gal. Make sure you are running a MPG-friendly tire and keep them properly aired, that is usually a MPG culprit. It appears that above 72-MPH the aero properties of this truck really starts to drag bad, don't drive more than that (75-mph tops). My own truck's MPG sweet-spot is 65-72-MPH FWIW. These motors are designed to be most efficient cruising at 1800-2100 RPM, I would try to keep cruise RPM 1800-1900 RPM. Consider having catalyst overtemp (in your PCM tune) raised to 76-MPH or higher. Do get a set of GM efans and get rid of the clutch fan, that's +0.2-mpg. Consider changing your motor oil to Mobil1 0W-40 Diesel Truck oil, I run it in my own truck and saw a MPG improvement as well as 10-degree drop in oil temps - this oil has thinner base stock (more efficient to pump) and higher ZDDP additive so protects well at temp, I recommend a Mobil1-206 filter but that will not affect mileage just engine longevity; Royal Purple guys say they get better MPG on that oil too. In your PCM tune, the converter lockup strategy will be KEY to economy, if it's not thought-out well and the converter is kicking in & out of lockup that will waste a lot of MPG so address that in your tune.

Those are all the 'cheap' ideas I have to help you with your MPG quest. Headers will help a tad but that's a big investment that I personally would not do on a stock 4.8L motor. If you want to spend money on the motor I would seek a good performance camshaft & new timing chain, mild street cams gain efficiency as well as a few horsepower and you can use that efficiency to save MPG.

  6. I think you need to first look at what's realistically possible with your truck (MPG-wise). Several guys here with 2WD trucks are getting 21-MPG freeway, and MidnightRidr also got 21-MPG freeway in his truck as well so I am going to say that's about the best that's possible... will going from 17 to 21 MPG be enough of an increase for you? If it is, then what you will have to do is swap the 4.8 for a LQ4 or LQ9, install headers & catback, a radix, a tonneau cover, a premium 2600-2800 converter, cam, and a PCM tune because *each* of those trucks has exactly that combination. You *may* be able to get this kind of economy without the blower. The 4.8L is killing you IMO, every 4.8L equipped truck I've seen has had worse running economy than the 6.0L. By the time you put all that money into the truck, it just isn't worth it.

  7. 3-inch. Don't even consider 2.5-inch. I've run both; the 2.5-inch did not gain me torque, performance, or MPG; MPG was unchanged, and the motor showed signs of running out of breath at 4500+ RPM. I run 3-inch exhaust now, performance isn't a problem, off-idle torque is better than ever, and I'm getting the best MPG I ever recorded (even better than stock).

My point is: 3-inch exhaust on the LS-motors is not a detriment! Other things (like TUNE or CAMMING or TUNE-UP) are far more critical to engine behavior than the 2.5" or 3" exhaust question...

  8. ok not busting your balls but who in their sane mind would pay $7500 for brakes or even $3800

I've almost lost my life to inadequate brakes; the Baer kit was one of the first mods I put on the truck. If you are going to keep your SSS long-term I would greatly encourage this kind of upgrade.

    Mr. P.

  9. Your truck is AWD, you are limited to a 3/4-drop kit without extreme re-engineering efforts in the front suspension. PIMPSS has had both 22's and 24's on his truck, and IMO the 24's are too big a rim, they definitely put the donk in your ride - if you like that kind of thing then go ahead but I say run the 22's. FWIW PIMPSS traded the 24s back for 22s after the novelty wore off. PLUS, I would not want the expense of having to buy 24" tires!

    Mr. P. :)

PS - where in Texas are you located?

  10. any realistic offers?

if i can get 50% value out of them, i'll take em off, if not I will sell truck with brembos.

Ballpark, those brakes are $7500 new; I would not expect $3750 out of them considering the wear apparent on the rotors. Still they are worth big $$$ especially if the red finish on the calipers is undamaged, and if I were selling the truck I would certainly take a day and replace them with stock brakes and sell separately, you would get well over a couple grand in your pocket for a day's worth of work and that to me is good wages! Best bet would be if you found someone willing to drive to your place and do a swap + cash with you. If you trade the truck with those brakes on the dealer will only give you a few hundred dollars more on your trade, then THEY will remove the brakes and sell them online to make 5x the profit. These guys that posted over $1000 are offering more than what the dealer will credit you for the brake upgrade!

I know that if I still lived in Sonora I would HAPPILY drive the 3-hours to your place and trade stock brakes + cash - you NorCal guys need to seriously consider this opportunity!

  11. I agree with your thinking. My own truck has 90K on it now with the original O2s, and I have been using EFILive a lot this summer logging and learning; I'm running open-loop speed-density (my PCM totally ignores the O2s) and my MPG went from 12-ish to a solid 15+ and my O2s take a long time to heat-up now, plus they are not 'switching' as fast as they used to in scans I logged years ago. IMO I would replace them every 80K-miles or so. Too bad those sensors are so damned expensive.

    Mr. P. :)

  12. Normally used parts don't hold their value well at all, but good brake kits are a different story - if they were in low-mileage condition, I would say 50-60% of retail valule; but since the pads need replacing, that will devalue the kit a bit, and if the rotors have lots of miles on them that will devalue the kit greatly because those rotors are not cheap to replace. What kind of condition are the rotors in?

  13. I was thinking Oct. or Nov. depending on overall weather.... just have to see how it goes over the next 30 days down here....

Well I just looked at the calendar for Dallas Raceway, and Friday evening 10/14 is the only test-n-tune in the whole month of October -and- the final test-n-tune for the whole year. I took a look at the calendar for Ennis but there's no TNT events listed. So that pretty-much mandates the schedule!
