SS 1/4 @ Phoenix Firebird Raceway...

Well I went to Phoenix Firebird raceway last night and ran the track 5 times. I did different things every run to try and improve on the times and finally determined that the HEAT had a major factor in E.T’s… :sigh:

- The first run I did nothing at all accept mash the gas at the green light.

- The Second run I did a power brake and jumped off the line a bit better. :)

- Third run I power braked and manually shifted gears, the SS just about makes it all the way down the quarter mile before having to shift into third gear. :)

- Fourth run the truck was getting really Hot :sigh: from consecutive runs, but I did the same pwerbraking and manual shifting.

- Run #5 after I let the truck cool for about and hour was the best time. I power braked and manually shifted as well.

The torque management system plays a major roll on the Stock SS. The shift times are very slow and feel like major power is lost in the motor. Manually shifting at 5000rpm helped to take tenths off, but the torque management system still holds back on the shifting even when done manually. I am sure a chip/programmer will help tremendously as well as a torque converter. After experiencing these limiting factors for myself I now see what some people were taking about and how much harder shifting helps in track times.

Ran the SS with “NO” weight reductions at all (Bed Cap, ½ tank of gas, spare tire, Speaker boxes etc)

As you can see watch out for the Diesels out there some of them are producing some serious Torque and really jump  off the line. At least I beat 2 R-Types and a BMW!

Over all I thought the times would be much better. :sigh: A buddy of mine ran his Ford lightning and ran a 14.45 time so that tells me that the Heat :smash: of the track was playing a major factor. Normally he can get consistent times in the High 13’s with his “L”

So now I am going to get a power programmer or chip, make some weight reductions and run at the track when it is much much cooler and compare the differences.

One thing is for sure I would like to know how Motor Trend got the Stock SS to run a 14.8 time??

Track times are just about the same; I may have dropped off a couple more tenths if it was a bit cooler and hualing less weight. I’ll run the truck again this winter when the temperature outside is in the 70’s and along with some weight reduction and a programmer to eliminate the to torque management, see if I can get down into the 14’s…

BTW how did you shift and stage at the light??

i drop it in to first in tow haul mode and power brake it with full throttle and i shit at max rpm. i did another run and shifted earlier on every shift i ran a 15.5 so i just stick with max rpm. i am for sure that with a programer it would be easy to get in to the 14s

I did not even think about using the tow haul mode at all! And I would shift at the 5000 to 5400 rpm range. So I probably could have gotten another couple of tenths shifting at higher rpm’s and using the TH mode, will try it next time, thanks.

All this talk about the strip, I was going to go to Carlsbad Raceway today by found out they require all drivers to have a helmut.  I'm trying to borrow one but I don't know if I can.

Firebird raceway is a bit different I guess. If you are under 14 seconds you need a helmet and under 12 seconds you need a roll cage. I did bring my helmet just incase there was a sudden microburst storm to propel me into the 12’s…wishful thinking… :)

You can use one of mine, 56.  Helmets.JPG

Lee, the only thing your helmet is missing is the spike in the center… :D

Firebird Sucks! I made the mistake of going last night also. They usually sell fuel at the track but the guy left early and I was forced to run on pump gas...... which means limited boost. The track wasn't prepped (it usually isn't), so it was it's usual skating rink type of surface. I tried getting down the track with my street tires and also on some slicks..... both were pitiful! All in all it was a wasted night. No good numbers to post anyways. Next time I'm going to SpeedWorld!

What were you driving last night?

I can’t relate to skating rink issue that you had, the SS came off the line good with more than enough traction with AWD.

I was just checking out there web site just before I read your post, much nicer facility.

I was driving my Dakota. You probably didn't recognize it without the red stripes on it..... it's just plain white right now. There were two white ones out there last night. Mine was the quieter one. AWD would definately have helped me!

No I didn’t see you there, did you happen to see the Cummings Diesel trucks running last night? One ram was running low 13’s…His name is Ben and owns or runs a performance shop here in the valley. I can’t remember the name Diesel performance works or something like that. Surprised the hell out of me that a truck that weighs so much can jump off the line like that.

Yeah....... he's always out there spanking people! hehehe

Here's what mine looks like with some traction and some good fuel:

Last night I was ONLY a full second off that and about 8 mph slower! :sigh:

I'll watch for you the next time I'm at the track. It'll probably be Speedworld though.

I will be at Firebird for the Truckin' Nationals race. I haven't missed one of those yet.
