NorCalSS
i just saw an article Pain At The Pump: Government Gas Secrets , about how carmakers run and test their cars for gas mileage. "And under these guidelines by the Environmental Protection Agency, carmakers are allowed to test miles per gallon by running the vehicle not on the road, but on what's essentially a treadmill for cars. During an EPA spot check, the car ran with no air conditioning, no inclines or hills, no wind resistance and at speeds no greater than 60 mph. ...but it gives carmakers what they want -- the highest possible miles per gallon to put on that sticker." With the gas prices these days it sucks to know that you're not getting the "real world" gas mileage that is advertised on the stickers. But hey, we've got trucks anyways but those who are self conscious about their gas mileage with their other cars, it still sucks otherwise. -ejay Edited May 9, 2006 by methodtical15 (see edit history)
kaotik1
The EPA has since changed the standards. They are now required as of 2008 to test cars in " REAL WORLD" conditions. You will have for the most part real numbers with stop and go traffic, and highway travel.
BenKey
They also use 93 octane, but that is in fine print on the sticker.
Blaze5509
I get better than the advertised mpg on the sticker so I'm not complaining.
CoolBlueSS
I get better than the advertised mpg on the sticker so I'm not complaining. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Same here. I drive conservatively 90% of the time, and I get 14.5-15 in town.
TBSS
I've been averaging 12.5 mpg, but with the corresponding smile on my face.

backinblack
you know, journalism like that shouldn't even be printed. Great job, make car makers out to be the bad guy and act like it's all some huge secret. The infomation on the testing has long been available on the EPA's website. The manufacturers, ALL of them are only following the testing set forth by the government and they are all using the same test.
