Which to buy lightning or sss

off topic but in SE michigan there is an SRT-10 at a dealer for 29,991!!! for that price you cant beat it. oh yea it is a quad cab.

It has to be used or wrecked for that price. No dealership would take a $20,000 loss on any vehicle.

The gas mileage is not as bad as everyone is saying, I am now getting about 11 MPG. If I stay off the gas ( which I can't ) I could get better than that. That is not much lower than the SS I had.

cant be a 20k loss, you figure at 29,991, you paid 28k for the motor and the rest of the other 1k covers the rest of the truck :P so they are making $991 on the sale :jester:

I thought he was talking about a SRT for sale not an SS! :jester::jester:

it was an SRT-10! it was a demo, and a 2005, so a left over that the manager probablly drove?? It was the only one left, and red :( if it was black I would have at least went for a test drive :driving::devil:

IMO-with the gas prices going up dealers will deal these b/c they want room for a caliber or something less than a big V10 gas-a-holic. I wish myy buddy did not just buy a TBSS b/c I could see him in the QC SRT-10

actually I do love performane but I don't like hauling really unless I have to so hauling isn't the selling point for me. I mean ya I know a lightning very well can kick ass. I have seen with my own two eyes a SSS kick 2 harleys ass. Really honestly I wish i could get the lightning and the sss. Again the lightning is the only thing ford makes I care about I don't really give a rat's @ss bout the other stuff cause honestly the rest of it seems very very crappy. This is coming with experience. I have gone through 3 fords all with bad reports. The lightning as long as its a 2001+ i WONT mind that much because i KNOW a lot of the problems and how to fix em and how to sup up the lightning but the harley to me was always for looks.

I dunno maybe ill go head and get a lightning and keep the expo but I can't lie I want that sss it looks like its a beast. Again 1 question is the SSS N/A or does it have a supercharger on it?

they dont make L anymore :banghead: you would be buying a very used one, keep that in mind.

I have seen the new harleytruck and I dont think thay are more than an appearence package...drive them, that is what sealed it for me, the quality of the Chevy compaired to the ford is not even close...I hope the new fords are better but the HD and L seem to have low build quality.

Have you thought about how well the truck is going to hold up?

I work for a Ford dealership and i cant believe what comes in! Ball joints at 40k! and you have to replace the whole control arm too not just a ball joint. To align the truck you have to buy an excentric kit. How does a 1000 dollar alignment job sound? I love those cause it takes me 2 hours to do everything and i get paid 4 hours for it.

Ford has their fair share of transmission problems as well as chevrolet and Dodge.

U joints!

Ford steering columns are shitty as well. After about 50k you start seeing a lot of slack in them especially with the lock cylinder especially when people hang more than 5 keys on them. I rebuild at least one steering column a week.

Also DPFE sensors are horrible! 100.00 bucks for a stupid piece of plastic those go out all the time i change at least 5 a day! Also Fords policy on aftermarket upgrades is if you mod it you void the whole warranty, now weather the dealership holds to that or not is up to them. they usually dont worry about anything small cause that keeps the shop from making any money. but if it cost you a motor and a ford rep comes to see the damage your screwed.

We have had a few lightings in the shop for excessive oil consumption. 99 percent of the time it ends up being washed rings and we cant warranty the motor cause 99 percent of lightnings have some kind of high flow air filter on them. ie. "Ford Represenative"

Ford ignition coils are terrible too! 100.00+ a pop and they go out all the time. Not to mention it is a 4 hour job to change all the plugs. Im sure much more on a lightning cause of the supercharger in there.

Also fluid leaks! after 30K almost everything has a small leak of some sort. Especially pinion seals, transmission pans and yoke seals, oil pans. Just everything leaks.

A/C lines break all the time!

6.0L diesels 16 mpg, blown head gaskets all the time aftermarket exhaust+ Ford Rep=you pay lots of money

Heavy duty trucks cant get the rotors turned even if you turn .0005" on the slowest speed. 900.00 brake job.

Ford considers drivetrain just the engine. Driveline is the rest of the suspension.

Ford seats dont hold up either and they arent the most comfortable in the world.

Fuel economy is horrible try 14mpg average for all the 5.4 extened cabs. Plus they are super slow too.

They accelerate like ford put 100 of the horsepower under the hood and set the other 200 in the bed.

The old body style "less powerful 5.4" would blow the doors off a new one any day.

So lets look at this. 71.60for spark plugs, 96.00 for plug boots, 30.00 fuel filter,35 fuel injector cleaner, + 5 hours labor @70 hr. 582.6 for tune up!

On to Chrysler products.

Horrible suspension, horrible fuel mileage, and expensive suspension parts "control arms, wirring problems, cheap parts, cheap materials, Dodge trucks still run off old school speed density set ups instead of mass air, Brake issues especailly with the 20's dodge rotors are too soft and they warp way easy. Run a Hemi Hot one time and see what happens, egg shaped cylinder bores.

IM tired of listing all the problems.

I work for Ford and drive my chevrolet proudly into the employee parking spaces. My truck is the fastest thing on the lot unless we have a new GT there. People are picky about those cars too! Cant open any thing but the driver door and cant roll the windows down cause if you break the seals on them it makes them hard to sell. Cant take any protective covers off cant start the car! you have to push the car around. it is a sweet car though. I think you might want to consider durability of the truck before you buy anything else besides a chevrolet.

I am not biased in anyway about chevrolets. Im sure chevrolet has their fair share of problems too but, i spent 3 years at an independent shop and half of the shit i worked on was Ford, 6/16dodge, 1/16 chevrolet, 1/16 import.

If you buy a lightning it will be used and probably have hard miles on it, just that much closer to bigger problems. Especially that 40K ball joint mark! If you buy the Dodge there again suspension and wiring problems.

Chevrolet "The most dependable, Longest lasting trucks on the road". Ford and dodge cant say that. My last chevrolet was a 91 single cab sep side 350 5 speed with 280,000 miles on all original everything. Except clutch and starter and wearable items like brake pads and tires.

Try to find a grease fitting on the front of a new Ford or Dodge. Then look under the sss, that should tell you something.

I wouldnt buy anything but a chevrolet. I make at Ford but that doesnt mean im not chevrolet all the way. Ford is just Job security cause i know that i can make twice as much at ford as i can working across the street for Chevrolet.

I dont believe in the Ford products as they are meant to bring you back to the dealership for major service.

Also pay attention to how many older chevrolet trucks are on the road versus dodge and ford.

Mid 80's dodges are almost non existand as are fords but you still see all those square bodys running around. Same goes for mid 90's almost all you see are chevrolets.

If you want something that is going to last that is why you might pay a little more for it.

By the way look at my sig. All that cost me $1400.00 and my truck can hit 146mph one mph from a lightning, and i still pull off 19mpg highway.

You can make anything fast, its just weather or not it will last.

If you want something lightning fast. Buy a regular cab silverado with the 5.3 and put a supercharger on it and go kill a lightning. Plus get better gas mileage on the way home. thats what i should have done but i wanted the 6.0.

Just thought you might want to know this stuff before you made your decision.

Im not being biased about this either. I have only been a Mechanic for 6 years and i may not have the most experience but it doesnt take long to figure out holds up and what doesnt.

buy the SSS!

[i tell you another option you might seriously look at, and that is the recent Duramax trucks, some of those monsters are scary fast.

Mr. P. :)

You are right on there! I have 3 duramax diesels for work. I LOVE my SS, but I've thought about getting rid of the payment (since I never get to drive it much anyways) and just drive one of the diesels. A buddy of mine has a dodge diesel and it blows me away everytime I'm in the truck... With a relatively small amount of $ you can make those trucks FLY. Of course that's not taking into account the sticker price :banghead:

Speaking of Diesels. I thought this might be interesting for all the guys that like diesels. Fords new power choke diesel is comming out in January. It is supposed to be 6.4L,Twin turbo's in series, 350HP/650lbft of torque. It looks to be somewhat similar to the 6.0's now. So we will see how those hold up, if they hold up as well as the 6.0 thats out now. Might as well kick yourself in the ass for buying one. Or if your too depressed ill kick you in the ass for you. I would wait a few years before i bought one and look at how they hold up in work trucks before i thought about buying one. Oh wait, transmission problems, ball joints, electrical problems, crappy interior quality, crummy seats. Nevermind :smash:

The diesel truck to buy is the Cummins, the whole truck might fall apart around the engine after 100k but you shouldnt have a problem with the engine. If you could put a cummins engine and allison transmision in a ford chassis and put a chevrolet body on it i would buy one and make my own diesel in 2 liter coke bottles like moonshine. But they dont make that truck so ill stick to the VHO and pay a kajillion dollars per gallon for gas :banghead: .

I would say the Dmax but i dont care what anybody says I have yet to see anyone make a diesel that will handle the abuse and mileage of a cummins. The only weak point for the cummins is the injection pumps dont last. I dont know much about the D max but the aluminum heads scare me with a lot of boost, i have heard instances of heads lifting off the block, broken cranks, and after 100k the old 6.5L would out pull one. But thats what i have heard, im sure that if you do all the regular maintenance, especially fuel filters, they would hold up longer but the cummins is time tested.

It would be worth it to me to buy a diesel if i could make a steady supply of fuel then i could afford to do every mod in the world to it and not have to go to the gas station unless i run out of beer  .
