Are the SS pistons forged.

Recommended Posts

hypereutectic -adjective (of a mixture or alloy with two components) containing more of the minor component than a eutectic mixture

AKA - Fancy word to cover the fact they they are still just cast pistons.

Getting closer to the real definition. As SSilverad60 said, its more silicon. These pistons are made by forcing in more silicon than would normally mix into an aluminum alloy. I think its past its normal saturation point. No matter, it main benefits are light weight, inexpensive, less heat expansion and stronger. Since it expands less under heat, you can run it tighter in the bore for less oil consumption and reduced wear. As a down side, the alloy is more brittle and unlike normal cast pistons, its prone to breaking or shattering compared to melting.

They aren't forged, but have some better characteristics than a standard cast piston. These are the same style pistons in the LS1 and LS6 engines. They also have a teflon skirt coating to further reduce engine wear.
