Stock Transmission

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to do some research on how much power a stock tranny will take but i have been unsucessful. I want to go forced induction but havent decided if i want supercharger, procharger, or turbo yet. If anyone could help me with the transmission piece it would be alot of help.

From what I have learned on this site, basically if you add a FI kit you will need to beef up your tranny. I spoke to my dealership awhile ago and they were saying anything more than 450-500hp then you will have safeguard the tranny (then again, that is the dealership). I am sure some more knowledgable people will tune in from the site. Just info I know off the top of my head (my truck is not being modded).

If you want a Procharger there is a member Sick03ss that had one for sale, not sure if its still around or if it's on ebay.

your t-case just splits the power, no mods as far as I know are required for that. Just make sure you do proper maintenance on it. Dont know what milage you are at, but I did a t-case service along with my tranny service flush at 50k to prolong the life of the entire system.

I have about 70,000 miles right now not sure of the past history on how much maintiance has been done. That brings me to my other question...When should i do a overhaul of my engine sense i plan on doing engine mods?

Doesn't really make sense to overhaul or rebuild your motor.. Unless you either run it untill its dead, or build it for a specific reason or application in the first place.

Get your goals and wants figured out first, then purchase your mods would be my opinion.

Good luck

The Sss comes with the 4L60E the 65 is just a beefed up version of it. The 4L80E is a sweet tranny but its pretty expensive more for race applications. The stall converter number mean that when you hold the break and gas at the same time how many rps the engine can rev before it will engauge with the transmission.

The SSS is equipped with a 4L65E not a 4L60E, but they are almost the same thing. The 4L65E has some hardened parts among a few other things that the 60E doesn't have. The 4L80E is a heavy duty transmission out of the 3/4 and 1 ton truck line, it has much larger/taller gear sets the the 65E and can take a ton more abuse. Many guys are actually doing the swap now, but it is very costly and requires some fabrication to make it work. Stall speed is what RPM the converter can flash to before the vehicle will move.....typically a higher stall TC will keep you higher into the power band when shifting during WOT also.......

I've got a ton of mods and FI is one of them and the only trans upgrades I have done is added a zippy shift kit/servo setup and a Trailblazer TC(TBTC) My SS runs 12's in track form and has been boosted for around 30K miles or so. I don't tow or haul so the TBTC is fine for me. Set your goals and make a plan of how you want to get there. If you want low 12's expect to get a built trans. I'm not there yet and I'm happy with my SS right now but I would like to shoot for low 12's high 11's. I just don't feel like putting another $3K into her right now as the rear end also needs some upgrades.
