jddmj
Here lately I have heard some neg. comments about powder coating chrome wheels. Will powder coating hold up to a chrome wheel? The rims are going to be sand blasted.

jddmj
It has some heavy pitting. Strips of the chrome is starting to come off....
nastyhabit
My powdercoat guy wanted to see a rim (didn't have them with me) and go from there. I'll be watching this to see how you fare..... Mine are in very good shape so I'm planning on running them chrome this year with new rubber and maybe crossing the powder coat bridge next year. JF-03-SS
It has some heavy pitting. Strips of the chrome is starting to come off.... You will prob. want to get them dipped vs. sandblasted them. Sandblasting them will not stop the pitting. JF-03-SS
Before powdercoat. After sandblast and powdercoat (only very slight pitting)
jddmj
Jeff, your rims look amazing. What exactly do you mean by dipped? The guy gave me a price on Powder Coating and Sandblasted for 300 bucks.....so thats why I was leaning that way. I would just get some new rims, but my budget is tight, and I like the wheel style. I just want black lol
JF-03-SS
Thanks, but they no longer are my rims (Sold them) When they dip them its some sorta acid bath/wash which removes the chrome and stops the chemical reaction in the metal that is causing the pitting. $300.00 is a really good price for sandblast and p/c. jddmj
How much does the acid bath cost usually?
JF-03-SS
How much does the acid bath cost usually? I think I was quoted $120.00/wheel because they had to be be delivered to Mass. and picked up as well. The guy that gave you a quote, has he seen your wheels? jddmj
No, I keeped hearing that he was the guy to send them to from everyone local, even the local wheel shops. I talked to him on the phone, and he asked me if they was chrome. When I told him they was, he said he could get them to last forever

Or maybe bring him your worst rim and ask him what he thinks.
jddmj
There was no warranty that I know of, but I got to do something soon lol. I had a chance on a set of U2 24's for a 1000 dollars, but bills got the cash at the time haha. I like the idea of the acid wash, but after that, and doing the coating, I could be another set of rims.
Mr.Scary
if you need them just for winter wheels, dont even worry about the pitting.. just have your coater blast em and coat em. i did and they turned out so good, i might use them for my every day wheels and not just winters.
