Frame, Wheel Well & Bed Protection

Recommended Posts

Well, as I took off the bed to primer...I went ahead and sprayed some rubberized protectant on the frame after noticing spots of rust and breaks in the original rubber coating. First, I scraped off any loose gunk from frame with a paint scraper then went at it. After taking the bed off, lifting it (with helpers), spraying it, etc. I saved the underside of the bed for another day. Therefore, without the help of others to lift the bed I thought of a way to do it alone, one side at a time. As you can see, I used a jack stand for supporting the bed and went at it with a decent bed liner. Didn;t want anything too expensive as this is just to protect the underside from rust etc. After being stationed in UT for 4 yrs i know how the weather, road salt etc can affect the under carriage. Now it's back in San Antonio loving the weather!

  • 2 weeks later...

i didn't grind the rust off. I just took a paint scraper at it to knock off surface rust and debris. Because the frame already has a factory rubberized coating, I didn't want to scrape or grind all the way down to the metal. I wanted to salvage some of the factory coating, instead of having to do it ALL overs again.

03 mass, yeah trust me i know how that snow salt and sand situation is...glad im not in UT any more. TallCanadian, its kinda hard do under the cab completely (i thought about it too-but that is a huge project in it self. so what i did instead was...... lifted the truck on jack stands and crawled underneath, spraying small pieces at at time that needed some additional protection. After all, the rubberized spray comes in an aerosol can so that's a plus also. Keep in mind the truck frame already has an oem coating so all you really need to do is add to some rough spots that might have gotten exposed. Thanks for the interest guys!pepsicheer.gif

You make it look ezaaay! I went to Ziebart near me and they wanted 15grand to do an undercarraige. Said "thanks" and walked out....I think that included basically take the truck apart and piecing it back together but I wouldnt trust them with that job. I plan on taking the spare wheel and tow package off, ill have to get some people to help me take the bed off and get the undercarriage done nicely. My neighbor did his Sierra Pro Sport with Por15 and he drove it in the corrosiveness here and undercarriage still looked new. I know I have a few spots to be touched up, nothing bad though. :pepsicheer:

Nice! Good choice of coating. I just used a 3M rubberized chassis coating they sold at Autozone/Advanced auto parts. I think it was about 7 bucks a can and I needed about 6. I could've put a heavier coating but I think it came out alright. Every little bit helps! Oh yeah and help with taking the bed off is a must. its easy to get it unbolted etc. (I don't know how much more difficult it would be with a bumper and spare since mine were both removed already due to a BSER roll pandbanana.gif) But, lifting it HIGH enough to clear the tire is what really sucks. Thanks to my bro n law, father n law and my wife haha we were able to do it
