Hey,

My names Drew Stegehuis and I just traded in my 2010 Cobalt for a 2003 Silverado SS and want to know what i can/need to do for customizing it (engine). I want more HP, mainly to woop my buddys Ford Lightning that runs 12.4 in the 1/4 as of right now. He says I'll never do it and im hoping chatting and help from you guys will help me prove him wrong. Im currently enrolled at UTi (Universal Technical Institute). Im a medically retired veteran. I was in the Army for 4 years as an Infantryman. I was stationed at Schofeild Barracks HI and deployed 07-09. January 28th 2008 I was hit by an IED which caused a TBI (traumatic Brain Injury) and made me blind and deaf on my right side.

I hope ya'll can help me get this SS up and above this Lightning!

Welcome! Thank you for your service to this great country!

To get your truck in the mid-low 12's it is going to take some cash however there are proven set-ups to get you there, many outlined here on this site. Here are just a few:

1. TVS1900 / D1 / Vortec / turbo at 10psi, Headers, GOOD tuning and some transmission modifications - cost around $8k.

2. 3400 stall converter, Headers, 150 wet shot of nitrous - cost around $4k.

3. Solid 402/408 Stroker with converter and supporting mods (headers etc.) - 6-9K

4. Heads/cam/intake with supporting modifications (converter headers etc.) and a small shot of N20 - 5-9k

Regardless, it isn't cheap to go fast in a heavy truck. Read around, I personally would start with the strip section on this forum and look at the times where you want to be and build a set-up similar to what has been proven to work well. Good luck!

...Oh, and racing the lighntings is my favorite pastime. Most think an AWD full sized extended cab truck can't run with the big dogs...

Thank you for serving, and for the sacrifices you've made for our country. And, welcome to the site. You'll enjoy your time here. I still check the site daily after several years as a member, and probably still will even if I no longer own an SS.

Krambo just saved you a ton of work trying to figure out where to start. Take his advice. Take your time because modding these trucks is addictive and can put you in a financial hole. Ask lots of questions, but look for veterans of the site who have been there and done the work. They are extremely helpful and won't steer you wrong.

FWIW, I went the tvs1900 route w/ a 2800 stall so I can drive it daily to work, tow my boat to the lake, and whip some ass when called for. Good luck and happy modding !!

lol thanks for the tips I'm going to that tech school right now about to finish a service writing class (yipiee! >.<) Thanks for the tips i plan on sinking everything i have into this truck, it WILL be a beast and it WILL destroy anything in its path no matter the cost. Being medically retired has its benefits i just have to find a good custom shop around here. I'm currently looking at Project X Customs (www.projectxcustoms.com) and talking with the people on the phone and looking at some of their work along with BBB reports/ratings I'm looking forward to working with them. Once i get home it will be a lot easier since my uncle has a garage with lift cherry picker machine tools and the such and i have my brother out there who has been machining for a bit.

As far as the thanks for my service I appreciate it and thank you for paying your taxes ;) I look forward to getting down to business next month on this beast of a machine and cant wait to navigate the forums and figure out what the heck I'm doing.

Hey guys Got an Issue and not sure where to post it and was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Looked up TSB's and everything and theres nothing to find. After medium distance drives (20-30mins) on regular roads under normal conditions my accelorator pedal will vibrate and hum. After stopping at a stop light it stops then starts again after a short while of driving. Not sure if its the pedel return spring or if its part of the electrical. Bringing it in on monday to the dealership to try and show them. If anyone has and infoprmation it would be greatly appreciated.

Take care and thanks for all the help!
