Tires for the track

Recommended Posts

There has been a number of posts over time on tire choices for the track and I figured this topic can make for a good bit of info to post on. There are many good street tires out there and I'll post some good recommended street tires. I'll also post some drag tires for those making bigger power and/or may be 2wd.

this is pretty good info zippy. iv also seen 255/50/16 slicks as well. i believe that makes it a 26" tire? another good peice of info would be the benefit of a 26-28" tire as well as the fact that with slicks wider is not always better.

tire size will determine on what size street tires your tune is set up for, what gear your running and trans combo. To see max of your current setup you want to set it up to you go threw the traps at the very top of 3rd gear. This can be figured out with a formula that I currently dont have. sure someone else does. But it will take into consideration tire height, gearing, transmission gearing in 3rd, and converter slippage. Im pretty sure current mph comes into effect but im not 100% on that.

This is what I found.

I just bought some alloy 17s and they feel so light compared to my stock 20 ss's. I wasn't sure if they really made a different at track or not. Some say .3 -.5 and was just confirming, thanks for the help.

In a perfect world, There are some calculators I will post a link too. Pretty much bench racing stuff, but it can give you an idea of the 60ft that is possible in a perfect world with the power you are making if you know the power you make. If you get a chance weigh your stock 20 and the 17 with whichever tire you will be running at the track. So we have real world weights for each. Then before and after times to show how much of a factor rotational mass is at the track. It would be nice to just have a sticky with wheel/tire combos and the weights of each.
