chawkins6789
How much of a pain in the ass are the studs on the manifold. Truck was built in August 2003. Also what size are the heads on the studs and bolt/thread size. I want to replace them with some grade 8 or metric equivalent. Blazerdave2000
Can't remember the size. As far as how tough they are it's hit or miss. Just depends really. I just recently did mine and the passenger size came out fine. The driver side the last bolt to the rear snapped right off hardly any force at all. Had to remove the whole head to drill it out and tap it. Best bet is just soak the heck out them for a few days then just go real easy and try to loosen them. chawkins6789
Well each manifold has 3 bolts holding the cat piping right? That's all I'm changing. I'm leaving the stock manifolds. Fireman31
13mm or 15mm deep socket, I can't remember which....and make sure to WD40 or PB Blaster the hell out of them since they will be rusty and difficult to remove. I remember cracking a deep socket on one while working on another members SS once...be careful not to round the heads off, or you will really have a hard time..... Blown 346
Yes 3 nuts, the bolt is a stud which are built into the manifolds. Just use alot of PB blaster and let them soak, maybe some heat and the nuts will come off.
chawkins6789
So what would be the bolt I replace with? Sent from my DROID RAZR MAXX using Xparent Red Tapatalk
Blown 346
If your only trying to dis connect the cat pipe from the manifold, there will be no bolt to replace, only 6 nuts total, 3 nuts for each side. Im not sure what size they are or there pitch. Get one off and take it to the hardware store or lowes etc and you can find out what pitch etc you need. chawkins6789
Learned a valuable lesson just now. Don't spray p blaster when the exhaust is hot. Also when spraying from underneath the engine covers catch a lot of over spray Sent from my DROID RAZR MAXX using Xparent Red Tapatalk

Blown 346
If you are able to use some heat and heat the nuts up, hit them with some PB. The metal will expand and allow the PB to get inbetween the threads and loosen up any rust making them easy to get out.
chawkins6789
After I get the nuts off, how do I remove the studs? And would anti-seize be of any benefit on the new bolts? synyster_SS
If the studs aren't broken or stripped, I'd just leave them. They are not fun to remove. Just replace the nuts when you reinstall the y-pipe, as well as the gaskets on each manifold (the metal ring on the driver side and the donut on the passenger side).
