Merc Dr.
This just started this morning. I was cruising at 45mph after driving 20minutes. All of a sudden the trans started shifting up and down so that it felt like it was stuttering. I put it in Tow/Haul mode and made it the rest of the way to work. On the way home, it was fine until the trans reached temp for the OD to kick in(5 minutes) and it started again. I put it tow/haul and drove home. Does this just sound like a solenoid problem or something internal? Is it hard to swap out solenoids? I had a shop go through the trans about 4years ago. Merc Dr.
As an added note, I had high perf solenoids in the truck before the trans was gone through. The shop removed them and said it would help the longevity. I never had the ECM retuned after they removed them. Would this cause an issue? Like I said, it was 4 years ago. onebadmax
Do you have a aftermarket TC?
Merc Dr.
From what I was told it's a 2800stall. I bought the truck used.
1BAD2K
Sounds like the converter locking/unlocking.
sprayed99
Your problem is the lockup clutch and has nothing to do with 4th gear. Converter clutch is possibly shitting the bed or the valve body is worn from the steel lockup valve. I would lean more towards the converter clutch. If you keep driving it without fixing it, it will require a complete rebuild if it doesnt need it already.
Merc Dr.
Why would the trans work fine other then 4th gear? If I shift it into 3rd manually it runs fine. It even works fine until the it gets to 100 degrees?

Merc Dr.
So I just need a new stall converter then?
canadianVRss
Replace it, dump your fluid, change Trans filter and try that. This mans info is usually correct. ^^^
synyster_SS
Sprayed99 is right on the money, it has nothing to do with 4th gear.. the TCC only locks up when certain requirements are met. Have the truck scanned for DTC's, and go from there.
onebadmax
I'm leaning more towards tuning. A higher stall converter needs retuning. Minimum duty cycle on converter needs to be upped. My trans did the exact thing when I put my 3200 stall in. Could still be a problem with TCC though.
Merc Dr.
It was tuned 5 years ago by Zippy. The servos were removed 3-4 years ago. I doubt tuning is the problem.
onebadmax
Was it tuned for the correct stall though?? If that has changed it can cause problem locking and unlocking. I mean one tune doesn't fit all here.
onebadmax
If nothing has changed since he tuned it, then yes I believe your. TC is trash
