2006IntimidatorSS
So I got my Silverado SS and I got to look at the under side of the truck. I noticed that my SS has a steel driveshaft on it. I was wondering, did all the Silverado SS pickup trucks come with steel driveshafts or did some have aluminum driveshafts put on them? Blown 346
The rear wheel drive SSS might have a steel shaft. All the AWD SSS have aluminum from the factory atleast every one I have seen. Edited April 21, 2014 by Blown 346 (see edit history)
chawkins6789
Most 4wd or awd trucks had aluminum from my experience and 2wd 1500's had a 2 piece steel. My friends 06 1500 crew cab is 2wd but has an aluminum shaft
BLOWN SS/T
It's the 2 pc steel shafts for the 06 RWD. I've read some people prefer the 2 PC setup over the aluminum for drag racing, and they have it high speed balanced. Anyone have more info on which drive shaft is best for a drag racing setup

Anyone have more info on which drive shaft is best for a drag racing setup This all depends on power levels. I have a aluminum shaft in my race car and have never had an issue. Most use them for the weight advantage. Now a days you can get a very strong aluminum DS that will take as much abuse as a steel one. BLOWN SS/T
I still have one or 2 laying around from my f body, and also have a huge long driveshaft off an escalade esv. Always wondered if it would work if I were to have it cut, or there would be a benefit to it.
shawnss
Pretty sure the rear is Aluminum in the AWD but the front are steel.
2006IntimidatorSS
Is there a way to get an aluminum driveshaft to put on the 2006 RWD Silverado SS pickup truck? I got an aluminum driveshaft off an older 1990s 2wd Chevy pickup truck and I was thinking of doing a little measuring. Not sure though if this one I got is long enough though. BLOWN SS/T
Idk if other then the weight savings if there would be a benefit to it. And idk if a 1pc ds would work on a RWD because I believe they're at an angle on our trucks, where a 1pc would have to be longer and also be somewhat tilted
chawkins6789
With the steel, the front half lays flat with no angle because of the center support bearing. I have seen factory aluminum on 2wd but it was a crew cab with the same 143.5 wheel base as our ext cabs
poopnewton
The problem with a 1 piece aluminum drive shaft on a 2wd ecsb truck is the length of it. Once driveshaft gets to a certain length if it's not balanced right at high speeds it more likely to come apart on you. It's happened to several of the guys on pt.net with the one piece driveshafts on the ccsb trucks once they took their speed limit off their trucks. This place http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/Truckhtml/Chevy-GMC.html Makes 2 piece to 1 piece conversion drive shafts but if you look at the length limit it's 86" and although I've never gotten under my truck to measure I'm pretty sure we pretty close to that limit. 2006IntimidatorSS
Okay cool. I will measure my steel two piece driveshaft when I get home again. I would like to have the aluminum driveshaft on my truck, will have to see though when I measure the length.
A_FUrious
How did you make out on this? I have to replace my pinion seal and I'm thinking on swapping out the rusty DS.
2006IntimidatorSS
Oh I haven't done anything with it yet. Been busy trying to get other projects done. I will be looking into this more later on. I just got other priorities to do first.
