Cluster Current Draw issue

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm new here but not new to my SS.

I have an 04 SS with the typical bulbs, and stepper motors being out. I've replace a few already (should have done them all in the first place) but recently I've left the truck sit and come back to a 100% dead battery. I have a background in 12v electronics so I busted out my meter and traced the 300mA draw to it being the cluster. I'm not wanting to buy an new one or ship it out, since I know I can handle the job. Im just looking to be steered in the right direction on what to look at replacing on the cluster. I've see some things that it may be a resistor, but that's about it.

Thanks in advance

James

I've never heard of a cluster causing a draw. Do you have any aftermarket equipment that is tapped into the same circuit? I guess it "may" be possible that a stuck stepper motor could cause the draw. I think the way the circuit is designed it doesn't have power after you key off. That is a weird one.... If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

I dohave aftermarket equiptment. Stereo system/remote start alarm, but I disconnected all of that prior to the current draw test. The draw disappear as soon as I removed the 10a cluster fuse under the hood. I never tested it to see if it was constant or switched fuse.

I did do some reading where people were having power issues with these style GM clusters having a fault where they were drawing power.
