He also said he wanted to make it exciting while towing the boat , is a cam exciting I think so, is nitrous exciting also think so, also think a stall convertor is exciting
Out of all that talk and trying to explain in previous threads and posts.........you still dont get it
I really think you are that fvcking stupid. I really do
-
If someone makes a rediculous suggestion such as a camshaft and stall converter for towing a boat through the mountains...then to suggest nitrous as a power adder as well....im gonna call you out. Bottom line. Either dont post "tech help" unless you are educated, or be prepared to get blasted.
If you dont like it, tough titties. Go post that suggestion on other forums. You think what I said was bad, you would get eatin alive elsewhere
-
Okay Brian! I will! Whatever you say.
We laugh about it now.....but I wouldnt be surpised if this would happen

Some of the "vets" on here are picking fights every chance they get with noobs. Several threads have been edited in the past couple of days because of it. This site has very little traffic now, why the mods continue to let a few seasoned members derail topic after topic??
All I'm saying is, if a member needs correcting, then correct the post in a straight foward informative way. Don't tell him to plastidip his ass, you're an idiot, or whatever. I hate reading to 3 pages of name calling just to get two sentences worth of info......
Its not "picking a fight". A few select members on here seem to think they need to offer tech advice to others and have no idea what they are talking about OTHER than what the might have read on here in previous threads and/or posts. And to add to it, they fly off the wall with stuff they only read and it doesnt even relate to help what the OP would need! I.E suggesting a camshaft and stall converter for towing in the mountains?! Are you f'n serious?
To the ones that ask for the advice, they might not know any different which is why they are asking the question. Then actually do what these guys suggest and either completly wreck their truck or go backwards in performance wasting their money.
Or, instead of "picking a fight" I can let the OP take the advice of installing a donkey dick cam and 4000 stall converter to pull a boat through the mountains.

The plastic ones are the torlan check balls. Just keep the steel ones.
As for the cooler, you can get a bypass to help with coolant temp in the colder months. I would suggest this.
Last, check out the How-To section. I made a How-To section on installing a shift kit. You are installing a different kit but you might pick up some different tips in there.

Which Firestone does your brother work at?
I worked at the Oak Park one for a couple years when I was in college. Since then they have torn it down and built a new building just down the road.

That's what I heard to, and is what I was originally planning on putting in until 2bfast chimed in. Now after seeing this PATC site, I'm leaning toward them. They have every imaginable part on their site - crossmembers for the swap, custom made transf. cases attached to the 80e, transgo shift kits pre-installed, sweet converters, paddle shift kits, you name it and they have it. Very impressive website.
I buy some parts for my builds from them when I dont want to mess with WIT Trans. I am not sure on their builds, you dont hear to much about them. Just remember flashy websites dont always mean a good product. Not saying they dont have a good product, but dont get ahead of yourself. As far parts for the swap, yes essentially they have everything you need. BUT, if you do your research right you can find and/or make these parts for less than half than what they are asking. But they are there if you dont want to mess with it and I can understand if you dont.
I mentioned Jakes because if I was going to buy a new already assembled unit he is the one I would go to. I plan to build my own unit for my Camaro and run his killer trans brake.
Like I mentioned before, you could easily get away with running a used unit and just reprograming the valve body. You wont be making enough power to need to upgrade hard parts internally. It would be super easy to find a used unit in the metro area and it looks like you have resources to help install a shift kit.
Yeah he was busting my chops about being happy with my choice of choosing FLT.
Def not busting your chops for the choice you made as they have a great product. But def busted your chops for having Chucks nutz plastered to your chin
You have got better though I will give you that........

Its funny how you 2bfast take an opinion about mods for a 4k budget and get all butt hurt and now resort to name calling.
If the budget was bigger I would suggest a new short block that makes more power since hes over 100,000 miles 4k doesn't take long to spend.
I just don't think a complete mounted and ready to drive Maggie kit is gonna be in a 4k budget.
Not to forget that his pushrods could use an upgrade along with valve seals, oil pump, and timing chain&gears.
I would say valve springs as well if a cam was getting done.
I also said I wouldn't do a convertor so I would like it if you guys would stop acting like that was me cause that was your other buddy there.
These are LS engines and it isnt 1952. His engine isnt wore out. Im also not butt hurt. Im calling out you and your rediculous partner from giving out rediculous information like always. But you dont seem to get it.
And yes you can find a used kit for $4k. I was even apart of one.
Last if he was going to put a new engine in just to tow, he would be money ahead to get rid of the current truck and get one that is more capable of hauling.

Hook a boat to it and drive it through the mountains. This is the whole point of the OP's question to the members. You for some reason are stuck on cam n stall which is total Fail. I'm gonna assume your very young and that's the reason your so smart. The best advise has been given over and over several times. Plus starting and stopping your cam and stall are crappy on gas ask me how I know.
Just give it up Jason. Him and Aldofoc*** are just gonna keep posting stupid shit just to show their existance. We all know what mod is best for the OP and lets leave it at that.

or do a turbo kit but its going to be allot more hands on but with the right turbo it would work great for pulling and won't effect your gas milage like any other FI application. You could do a pro charger but I just don't see it being ideal but it would work.
I wouldnt even go down that road..........
Roots blower is what you want
-
That's (A) option not the only option if I was gonna run a supercharger I would run a procharger with an intercooler but that's my opinion
A Procharger is NOT the blower you want for towing applications and does not make low end torque like a positive displacment blower or roots blower does.
-
For what he has already done to his truck and his posted budget I believe it is his best option. With a 4k budget, going with a new unit is clearly out of reach but there are and have been some nice used units coming around from some reputable members here recently. Like posted multiple times in this thread and countless times on this forum they are great for low end torqe which is what you want for towing especially going through mountains.
-
You can fab exhaust but cant post pictures on a web forum
-
More air means more fuel so that Maggie is gonna need bigger injectors and under normal driving that is gonna use more fuel. its already towing the boat he just wants a little more power not 2 grand added on 2 the annual fuel cost
I disagree. He can run the stock injectors just fine with low boost
-
A cam ,
Cam and install $2500.00. Wet no2 kit 75hp shot and install$ 800.00 to a grand and retune couple hundred nice 150 hp without worrying about high air intake temps of the Maggie
Get a cam maybe a torquer v cam? Should be around 890 for the cam kit and installed just depending on where you get it done maybe a 1000 for cam kit installed. Also maybe a nice intake and stall converter say maybe a LSXRT a 3600 stall and a shift kit and corvette servo. You should make about 450hp to 500ish like that some may say instead of the intake go with heads but heads can be pricey at least a 1000 to maybe 3000.
I wouldn't do a cam without doing the valve springs valve seals and pushrods and timing gear&chain along with a new upgraded oil pump and that around here is about 2400 parts and labor and that's a deal. And the same installer wouldn't do the cam until I did the stall convertor said I wouldn't like driving it like that and a stall convertor could run 550 to a 1000 not installed. You wanna be happy with your choice be careful and ask more questions before your purchase
This is why I get so negative on this forum sometimes
The OP clearly said he wants to pull a boat and through the mountains and you want to suggest a camshaft change along with a bigger torque converter stall speed?! Nitrous?!
what are you worried about high intake temps for? The magnacharger would be perfect for pulling a boat and its really what they were designed for...was for extra low end torque to pull payloads with.
-
Actually the majority of that gain is in the camshaft, but hey looks like you got it all figured out. If you are happy with gaining 15-20hp for two grand in heads then go for it
Thank you
If you want to spend 1500 more for 20hp then go for it. I know with a budget and for what else you will need to comlete this budeget I would want to put the extra in the fuel system. You can have all the nice pretty blowers and heads you want but fuel makes it go.
Something to.think about
Oh, and I agree on being broke. You can take a look at the bucket of bolts I put together in my sig. It didnt run very well at all......

When you present a discussion of this subject you will never get a "perfect" answer.
I suggested doing some minor machine work to your factory heads for the fact that what you pay for a set of CNC PnP heads you really wont gain a whole lot for what you spend. And maybe milling the factory 317s isnt the anwser on a boosted application especially with LQ9 pistons. I lack expertise in this area jus like cam specs so maybe one of the bros can chime in on that.
All im saying is instead of spending 1500-2000 in CNC heads you can drop maybe 500 on the factory heads and get more bang for the buck. -
I wouldnt even mess with L92's. I would slightly mill the 317's, valve job, new springs, valve stem seals, and roll with that.

Good response
Carry on

Clean truck.....not sure whats up with the Z06 emblems tho
-
This is where more stall speed would come into play.

Looks killer. I loved my Speedstur and BSER combo.
Thats gonna turn out good
