  1. I just got my motor back together and measuring for pushrod length. I got the cam on the base circle and set my checker to zero lash for the valve. I tried it on a few just to be sure, with the same procedure. I have came to a length of 7.266 before adding preload. So with .075 it is 7.341. So I order 7.350's and get .084 lifter preload. This all seems fine. The reason I'm puzzled it because the base circle of my new cam was .09-.1 smaller, then I got .020 shaved off the heads, and comp cams 850-16 lifters. Now with this in mind I was thinking I'd need a 7.425-7.45. Am I thinking about this too much and should just trust the checker?

I'm just really surprised I'd need smaller than stock considering the smaller base circle.
  3. Oh dang... Chances are, I'm guessing, ill need different ones. I ordered up the checker so we will see for sure. I just can't see chancing it. Ill order new ones if I have too. If the stock preload is .130 and new lifters are the same I hypothesize needing a 7.435-7.445. To be in the .070-.080 range. This is purely hypothetical though because in unsure of stock preload and whether my new lifters will be different at all. Hopefully their about .040 taller lol Thanks for the input badmax. Ill update with what size when I get the heads back on and stuff
  4. As the title states I'm hoping to find factory preload for the lq9. I measured base circles on my cams today and my trick flow cam was 3/32, .094, smaller. Stock was 1-9/16 new cam is 1-15/32. I have looked and found one thread saying stock preload is .130, assuming my new lifters are identical to oe lifters (comp 850-16) with stock pushrods I'd then be at about .036 for preload. I haven't measured my pushrods cause I don't have a way too accurately, but I've read they are 7.385. So if I buy 7.4 pushrods I'd be at about .051. I've read the lifters call for .045, but I've also read .060-.080 is better. I know of pushrod length checker, dial caliper, and bolt torque method, just looking to order the stuff and have it. So I figure if the lifters the same it's close to comps spec, if its a little taller it'll be closer to common specs, and if its shorter ill need different pushrods. I already have the 7.4 so in hoping they'll work. This motor has been nothing but surprises so far unfortunately. Thanks in advance for any help I do in fact have aftermarket 7.4, just haven't measured my stockers. Sorry for confusion
  5. Junkyard is helpin me out :)

  6. Good point. That's another reason I didn't really feel the need to order them up initially. Ill prolly be shifting at 6400, so based off your experience and alot of others I've read. It should hold up I just wanna get this thing in my truck. Lol. I think I have my set up figured out. Thanks for the help fellas!
  7. Sounds good man. I have the pump and chain. I wanted to do rod bolts but heard its sketchy without getting them checked out. What do you think? I'm pretty stretched for cash right now due to things going wrong one right after another lol if I could just put them in I'd like too but I can't afford to have then checked and new rings and everything. It sucks but I have faith in the ole 6.0. I appreciate the help. I'm hoping the place I bought the motor will help me out a little. The tag says it has 102,000 on it, my current 5.3 has 222,000 and a guy put a down payment on it already.
  8. Sorry, 6.0 is on engine stand. Pulled cam and found a messed up lobe. Pulled head and found lifter to be damaged as well. I'm looking at the comp 850-16's. I looked on Brian tooley and the morels on my price range are unavailable. He also sells ls7 lifters but I'm on the fence about those per prior advice ^
  9. Btw, my motor is an 04 LQ9 and my rockers didnt have any such coating, I haven't looked at my crankshaft so I can't attest to that, but you may want to get a second "GM connects" opinion. I think you cam to the right place and the fellows before me and I gave lots of places to start the search. You did say it would be getting torn into this weekend so hopefully you figured it out. Update us if you can
  10. This may be a shot in the dark, but does your truck see high rev ever? Maybe you bent a pushrod. Like the others said, pop that valve cover off and take a peek. There's not a ton to see under there but it's a start. I ALWAYS cut my cars off first thing so I've never experienced noise from them, but I agree those could be giving you some phantom noise. My motor on my stand right now has 100,000 and the cam had noticeable damage to a lobe and a lifter chipped up- it WAS bone stock. If you have stock mani's I could see a minor exhaust leak to cause this issue, even with aftermarket header systems. Sometimes the gaskets are just shapoopee. Which leads me back to cats, it may have enough flow to support at idle but any rpm backs it up and causes spark knock. Maybe try running it open manifold. You may not hear much of anything besides exhaust at that point though. As for that coating.. I really doubt it's effecting anything in your motor, and I certainly do not see any reason to pull the motor at this point, maybe the head if you cannot figure it out from pulling the valve cover. Rockers are known to be a weak link but I'd think if the bearings or keepers failed it would be much more noticeable. Than a mild knock/loud tick. There are alot of things to check. I would say your short block is probably fine. Without knowing more from you this is about all I can think of. I know spark plugs and wires were mentioned. I could see a cracked/broken plug possibly doing this. Maybe you could try to catch the noise in a video for us. Hope you can get it fingered out with minimal damage to the motor and wallet!
  11. I found some comp cams high energy lifters on summit.. And chev perf, gaskets at 4.02. Along with arp bolts.
  12. I checked out Brian Tooleys site, he has 2 different ls7 sets and a set of morels that are unavailable right now. What about some comp r's or the comp replacements from tsp?
  13. Hey everyone, went to do my cam swap last night and found some destruction on the cam. Pulled the heads, lifter was chipped up I'm hoping its allon the magnet. Nothing huge but chips nonetheless. So now I'm in the market for as the title states. I'm lookin at getting the chev perf MLS head gaskets, they have a 4.2 bore though, will that be ok? I believe they are stock thickness at .51 compressed. Next I was looking to get the ARP bolts, not studs. Less than half the price of studs, and boost is in the far yet. Lastly, I am hoping to go with LS7 lifters. These parts are the result of being low on cash after buying my motor, cam swap, and converter.... If money wasn't an object I'd buy all the bada** stuff. The cam is a 220/224 112 .575. With that in mind, I just want some opinions on the setup... TYIA.
  14. LS7 lifters with chev performance H.G.'s and ARP bolts?

Needless to say the heads came off, though I was hoping to leave them. That's what you get for buying from junkyard I guess.

HSP twin kit on a 14 Denali Duramax. I'm sure the smog police will love this! We don't have emissions up here but equipment violations we do have and this thing is missing some stock equipment ;) HSP said we were 2nd in US to do this kit on LML
