  8. No, I disagree - detonation manifests itself as bearing wear at the parting lines. Imagine placing a half-bearing on an anvil and striking the face of it with a ball peen hammer, the shell will 'curl' inward, and the ends of the bearing will scrape against the crank, and that is not what happened to this motor. This engine was reassembled dirty, I'd say from the cylinder wall scratches it was contaminated with metal dust; the scratches are *below* the rings, so the break-in oil was carrying whatever ate the motor. So my question is, you did change the oil after the first 30-minutes of cam break-in, right? If so, then all this damage happened in the first 30-minues, unless the original bearings were re-used. What do the mains look like? And were the valve stem seals completely shot or what, those cast pistons are coated with a bunch of gunk. Mr. P. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep, detonation damage just hammers the crank and bearings, and actually squeezes it out either side of the rod. Seen this first hand on a couple of engines. This was definitely dirt wear. You can see how everything is scraped off. This guy must have gone straight from machining to assembly. No cleaning at all.

Do like P said, document, have a friend with you everytime you talk to him. That way if it comes down to your word against his you have some back up. Good luck.
