I've had good luck with various Bel models through the years (currently have a Bel 980 in my SS), but I've always heard good things about Escort, especially the Passport 8500. Most radar detector shootouts put the Passport 8500 on top.

Here are some good links to look at:

A TOPIC I KNOW ABOUT!!!

I have used every radar detector under the sun... well, almost...

My Manager at the Toyota Dealer had a Valentine1 and he likes it, it was good... just damn pricey..

My best friend got a Bell 985 which is great, esp. for the price ~200

I used another friend's Escort and i got hooked, easy to read, easy to customixe and works extremely well in the hills of NJ.... ran me under 300 so better price than the V1 also....

I have an 8500 and swear by it...

I built a radar scrambler type thing that made radar guns come back with kinds of crazy numbers, got in an accident (i wasn't speeding!) and it was destroyed... never made a new one... hmmm... sounds like a nice project this weekend.. if I can just remember where I put the plans... :shakehead:

I like Valentine 1 because of the directional arrows; you at least know where the radar is coming from. Also, whenever the valentine 1 is improved, you can send in your old Valentine 1 for an upgrade or replacement for a nominal fee without having to buy a new detector. However; if a radar or laser is used in the "instant on" mode, and their are no cars in front of you, ANY detector will simply be your warning chime that you are getting a ticket. Radar detector companies never mention the term "instant on" in their advertising or their product testing.
