Engine Saga...you'll like this

Thats strange bearing wear, top side only.   Looks like you might have had a little detonation when you were playing with the tune. Look at the rings and see if they are pitted from detonation.
No, I disagree - detonation manifests itself as bearing wear at the parting lines. Imagine placing a half-bearing on an anvil and striking the face of it with a ball peen hammer, the shell will 'curl' inward, and the ends of the bearing will scrape against the crank, and that is not what happened to this motor. This engine was reassembled dirty, I'd say from the cylinder wall scratches it was contaminated with metal dust; the scratches are *below* the rings, so the break-in oil was carrying whatever ate the motor. So my question is, you did change the oil after the first 30-minutes of cam break-in, right? If so, then all this damage happened in the first 30-minues, unless the original bearings were re-used. What do the mains look like? And were the valve stem seals completely shot or what, those cast pistons are coated with a bunch of gunk.

Mr. P.

:withstupid: Yep, detonation damage just hammers the crank and bearings, and actually squeezes it out either side of the rod. Seen this first hand on a couple of engines.

This was definitely dirt wear. You can see how everything is scraped off. This guy must have gone straight from machining to assembly. No cleaning at all.

I was on my 3rd oil change in 1500 miles. 1st after 30 minutes, 2nd after 500 miles. The last oil had 1000 miles and was black...on the stocker at 3000 miles the oil was still clear. I have to make some calls today, and get it to a machine shop that is "unbiased" and pay them for a couple of hours labor to mic the bores and pistons. The guy I had measure my bores and pistons is a QC specialist at a Tool and Die company...he has 30 years experience. He brought gaige blocks over and checked the bore gauge and outside mic before we measured everything. I would agree that beyond improper skirt clearances, the engine was assembled with a lot of dirt in it...that and used parts(look at the crank gear).

That is the right thing to do. Having a repair shop, I can tell you with the pics and having it inspected by another shop, the guy will end up having to give your money back. It's people like that, who give good shops a bad name. I have made my share of mistakes, but I fix them without screwing the customer, thats why my has the best reputation around. We take care of our customers, thats the only way to stay in business. If it goes to court, I can say it looks like you will win.

No, that tune was a work in progress. If I remember the timing curve was off. A lot of that was from the guy that was working on my truck. I have hopefully since fixed it. I really need to have it removed. I may forward what I'm running to a couple and have them check it out.

After a talk and show and tell on Friday, and a e-mail of the engine specs I got the call today. My engine builder called to say he's gonna make things right. I was told the machine shop made a screw up as they assembled the short block. I was told that I will be getting all new internals, plus all machine work including Bore, hone, align hone, balancing, and hot tank. Ohm the bonus is that I get to assemble the parts myself. I get everything in boxes new so I will know what all is in there. I will give him the chance to fix things, although I'm gonna be out quite a bit of labor. Hopefully things are looking up. Later

Mainly what I was referring to is that the power enrichment isn't set to come in until 90% throttle. That can cause big problems. I happen to see it there and downloaded it. When I noticed that my first thought is that I hope they fixed that.

No shit. :wtf: Glad things are turning around for you here

At this point I will believe it when I see it, but I'll try. A very reputable local salvage yard has a 10K LQ9 for $2822 out the door including a $300 core. I would keep my engine anyway this turns out. I really want my truck back, and I'm sure it will be 2 weeks before I get all of the parts back due to having to order pistons and the machine shop wait. I am gonna give the guy a chance...I just have a gut feeling that he isn't being completely honest. We'll see......

If you can, get the deal in writing. Tell him you want to see all the part numbers, etc. on an invoice or shop letterhead for insurance purposes (you need it if you are going for a "stated value" policy anyway -- e.g. Allstate only covers $1000 in mods).

Well...I broke down and heated up the old credit card. I went and bought the 10K mile LQ9, picked up my trans and I should be on the road by the weekend...depending on the weather and if I can get a doay off of work. At the very worst I will have a new engine for sale in the near future, of course it will be put together correctly. I hate to step back to stock, but I'm gonna keep the headers and radix on it. I dropped off the engine parts today. My builder couldn't have been nicer. My mind is much more at ease now. EVERYTHING I paid for will be replaced. I could not ask for anything more. Assuming this all works out I'll tell who it is, because it is rare that somebody does step up to the plate when something is F'd up. I have said a lot of things in anger, but I was angry and maybe I didn't have a reason to be...sorry. I have a lot of $$ invested in this, and that is what upset me so much, that and having to do a bunch of work myself. The builder says my engine will be ready in a week or 2 so I'll keep you guys posted. At this point if all of the promises are kept then I will be thrilled, so now maybe I can get some sleep.

And sadly, that is the way ALL of his tuner's (see sig) F/I tunes have been that I have seen... :puke:

That's great news.

So do you intend to stick with the 10k mile LQ9 now and sell this new engine?
