Well, I need some. I get these retarded pop-ups even when I am working on a Word document or even HPTuners. I get a Viagra pop-up and some jewelry ads on a regular basis now. I also noticed alot of "doubleclick" files in my system that I keep deleting. I also notice that my computer is a tad slower than usual.

So what is everyone using and are you happy with its performance???

Viagra? Jewelry? Sorry man, but I think this is a sign :jester:

I have been using a free version of AVG Anti-Virus/Spyware and it has been working great.

I know lots use Spybot but when I had something nasty grab onto the system Spybot didn't take care of it. Actually when I went to find software to help the Trojan would intercept and not allow a download..

Anyway one program that worked wonders for me well over a year ago is called.

Advanced Windows Care

They have a free for personal use download

Here

I have told others about it and they had success as well. I know it's a coin toss but I can vouch for it.

Good Luck and stay away from them porn sites LOL JK

I'm a big fan of Spybot... It does most of the annoying little crap, has issues with the bigger bugs though (usually finds them just has trouble erasing system-embedded trojans). For those I usually find out what bug it is and go online and download a fix.

For the most part, once the system is clean Spybot will keep it that way. If you set it up to self-update, run weekly maintenance scans, immunize regularly, and set up the TeaTimer (system registry protection), you should be set for life.

Good luck!

I run Webroot's Spy Sweeper, they have a free version as well as a paid one and I also run Bit Defender. Between these 2 programs nothing gets in.

The best advice I can give you is to perform Windows update frequently. Once you get your system clean running the 2 programs I mentioned with doing Windows updates will keep you running great.

spybot, and adaware are the two best ones to get.. also check out getting the latest smitfraudfix.exe file and run that.

if you're running ie7, download and install ie7pro and install it, enabling the adblocker ad in, which will help a ton.

other than that, run trend micro's ru botted free beta, and their free online scanner called house call.

then if you can get it, get symantec's latest antivirus.

but do NOT use mcafee's AV.. I dont care what anyone's rebuttal is here.. it sucks.. its the worst one made. its corrupted so many client's files, i cant even begin to explain..

that should get you some place.

of course.. once a year, i just wipe and rebuild my pc and laptop anyway.. best way to clean it all up

thats advice from an 11 year veteran Network Admin

btw, webroot's spysweeper is not that great, in fact, it carry's in spyware that you dont see.

I run Firefox3 (Beta) with adblock plus, windows defender, and spybot S&D routinely updated with the tea-timer. As has already been said, Spybot works good on a clean system and defends well against most malware. Windows Defender, I found, has surprisingly worked very well for me. Of course, I keep WinXP updated as well. My company forces me to run Symantec...otherwise I would be using AVG for anti-virus.

Krambo, it sounds like you might have a bad case of the smitfraud. Take a look at this topic "SmitFraud How-to". If you follow this guide, you should be cleaned up in no time.

I run McAfee 8.5i which blocks spyware and adware. For cleanup, I use Spybot and PC Tools Desktop Maestro/Mechanic (which I purchased). Between the two, it gets pretty much everything. I also have Google's Toolbar installed in IE7, which blocks most popup ads.

thanks for asking this Kevin. I just got a new laptop over the weekend and was wondering that very thing. I had Spybot on my last one but wasn't sure if there was anything better now. Gonna have to look into the others too.

They say no one tool seems to catch all the bugs. Sounds like you got a serious infection there. I would use several anti-spyware products on your system to clean it up, and then use some sort or Firewall/anti-spyware program for continued protection. The sad thing is, there are bugs out there that no anti-spyware/virus program can detect (like root kits), and you may think you have cleaned up your system but still be part of some hacker's bot-net. Sometimes you just have to nuke the hard drive and start over.

I use a hardware Firewall/router and the paid version of Zone Alarm. It comes in a few different versions, I have the combination of Firewall and anti-virus and anti-spyware/trojan. No known bugs over the last several years, so I am a happy customer.
