d walker
Yeah-- Motor Trend did something similar a year or so back. They drove from LA to Florida with gate up and back with gate down. Similar results but with real MPG stats.
Deebo
Where do you find a "partial" tonneau?
TBSS
Where do you find a "partial" tonneau? On my truck.
n2opwr
I just skimmed over the article, but it sounds better to race your truck with the tailgate up, rather then off because of the increased drag. I think the increased weight of a tonneau cover will hurt any advantage of less drag at the dragstrip and the same may be true with your tailgate. My el camino on the other hand has a fabricated aluminum tonneau cover that weights next to nothing.
Krambo
...Take the tailgate off for racing. The weight savings far outweighs the concern of increased drag. Want to save on drag....fold the mirrors in. Awesome article. Now maybe my wife will let me buy a bed cover ;)
SuperSport
I think the next time i go to the track that i will make a few passes with the tailagte up and see how it does. Great find Ben. thanks

BenKey
Probably 100-110 pounds difference, depending on which hard cover you get. Just a guess.
TimC3
Wow... looks like soft cover for me then.. Plus I won't have to take the thing off to haul anything.. just roll it up.
n2opwr
My fiberglass cover probably weighs over 200 lb. I use my lift to take it off and put it on, that's the only way it can be done with one person. Heavy amd akward.
