The protectors keep me from being so concerned about it getting scratched up. The stock tailgate protector on mine chipped in a heavy wind, I didn't see how it was going to last. The black will still scratch but won't show as bad as a painted surface will. The red would match better but for what you are using the protectors for I think your better off leaving them as is.
