Clutch Plate Wear

Recommended Posts

ok so i have been on this forum since the start and have found a lot of useful info but cannot find a good answer to my problem . my list of mods is on the bottom . the problem i am am having is that my truck eats transmissions . my current 4l80e that seems to be working fine just went in for a normal oil change and the mechanic found a lot of clutch plate material in the bottom of the pan , which leads me to believe that it is not long for this world . i am looking for opinions on what could be going on assuming the last guys to rebuild the trans knew what they were doing , could my tune be causing this ? line pressure to high or something like that . seems like its the 4th gear clutches that burn up first . trans guy blames the tuner , tuner blames the trans guy . i am lost and tired of spending money on this .i love this truck but the wife is gonna make me sell it if it breaks again lol and may not let me mod the cts-v . so help please . i need to go fast :)

oh not on the list below is the tru cool cooler although my trans still seems to run at around 200 F

mine is the level 2 4l80e from these guys http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4l80e.htm

Hmm that could be tuning but I'm not entirely sure. What I can tell you is that there are many many guys on the site that swear by the 4L80E for holding up very well under very powerful motor circumstances. Think chase is an example of that he's using a 4l80E behind his twin turbo'd 427 LSX and has yet to have any problem that I know of.

yup thats why i went that way cause people said they dont blow up , i have been through 3 .

Wow that sounds really strange, I think your guesses are right of either the trans builder or the tune has something messed up with it. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable with transmissions will chime in soon. Good luck.

Wow sorry to hear. thats a bummer. how many miles are you getting on these trannys before they let go? sounds like your making some good power but you would think a built 80 would hold up to what your laying down. Might be a tuning issue? I've had great luck with my stock 80. im not putting down crazy numbers but i've been hard on it and in stock form this 80 has out lasted my 2 built 60s.

Mr. P knows these transmissions inside an outside and then some. He prolly has the answer. Hmmm this makes me wonder if I should go with the FLT lvl 6 4l65 e or a 4l80 with my build I'm doing.

Its hard to say on something like this. i know in my case i was just sick of putting built 60s in and them only lasting for 3k miles and they were toast again. i also only went with a level 2. maybe i would of had better luck with a FLT level 6. but sense i have already swapped to a 80 i'll just do a build 80.

I can't see your signature but your problem might be with both the tune and mechanical. How did you fix the electrical issue between the 4l60 and the 4l80. Who set up the tune. Was the tune done with efilive or hptuners.

More info please.

The guy at FLT said that the level 6 would be good for 1000hp, I only plan on putting 500 down on a stock motor, then plan on building a 408 and put 800 out on the second build, but it's all time and money :)

My 65E's never had an issue. I know of one that has at least 50 11 sec passes on it, plus street time.

FLT makes good units, but would you really take that to heart?? I sure wouldnt.......

Agree. I would be shocked if FLT said this. ...maybe there was some communication errors and it was ment to be "has held 1,000HP and lived".

O.K. in my opinion, it is in the mechanicals of the transmission and not the tune. Lydon has been in this business for decades and is a well respected tuner (although anything is possible). I am sure he did a segment swap for the 80E and dialed it in just so. Can you elaborate on the cooling for this transmission / previous and the temps you typically see? How about converter, are you having it rebuilt / flushed/cleaned each time you had a tranny failure?
