losing oil

Recommended Posts

GM states " ...a loss of 1 U.S. Quart between a 3,000 mile oil change interval is acceptable/normal..."

if it's not showing on the dipstick, then isn't general rule that it's two quarts low? or is that old rumor I've heard

I just had to ask the obvious. No offense. Then your truck has got to either be leaking it or burning it. Maybe do a compression check if you dont find any substantial visual leaks underneath. Have you sniffed the exhaust?

I know man, was just having a little joke. I wasn't serious, but I'll see what I can find when it's not 34 outside

32 out thats it. I'd take that. thats warm around here. I put a new front clip on my 98 sierra 2 weeks ago outside and it was only 10 out. after 3 hours I was really freezing. :jester:

L's motors are notorious for crankcase pressure. Pull off the tb and I bet that its very oily inside the intake manifold. Most likely where it's going. Install a catch can and you'll catch the oil before it re-enters the engine. At least you will know where it is going. (Peice of mind) watch for smoke at start up from the exhaust .... It will look different than the typical cold day smoke you are seeing

if I pull it off and it is oily, do I need to do anything in particular or just clean it and install the catch can?

People own a good old Cadillac knowing they burn and drip oil and they just check it frequently but if u ask them to sell it they'll say hell no man that's my caddy man so not to solve the problem but if I was to say to check and replace is the valve seals get over heated they could leak and burn off the oil an never be detected until it got real bad you might not see any smoke but still burn the oil

pretty much clean and re-install and run it. Install the catch can when you get it. this could be your issues as i seem to find 1/4 to half qt in my catch can from oil change to oil change. could be valve seals as stated above or even rings. These motors are very well built so Id highly doubt rings, and replacing valve seals isnt too hard of a job honestly and could be a culprit but id point my finger to crankcase pressure FIRST then if you still have oil comsumption then look into your valve seals. Heck do a compression test before anything else. but a leakdown test would be even better
