  1. Whats sad is my truck never even gets as clean as most of you guys, VT is hell on vehicles and its my DD so it sees it all...and as for the dogs, my mastiffs usually ride in the bed which translates to huge slobber masses all over the bed sides. But during the winter months or 2+ hour drives they sit in the ex. cab with the seat folded up, Mason even found a head rest.

  2. If you have dreams of fi, the motor should be built for that right away so you save money. If money is no object you can build a na purpose motor then change up, otherwise you need to start your fi build now. You realize this would sacrifice a bit of na power in the mean time?

Money is an object...I have between $6-8k to spend total...If I have to sacrifice HP for then so be it, eventually in the long run I would like to have a F/I 408...from what Ive researched I feel like I should be able to achieve a 408 prepped for F/I for what I have to spend. I will be calling Zippy sometime in the near future, I just work messed up hours and I know hes west coast, so I got a 3 hour time difference on him...

  3. 450 at the crank is to easy, even with a stock cubed motor, keep your goals high, But first you NEED to decide if you want FI or NA, DD truck, track and weekend truck, or all out truck. Then a plan and parts can be selected based on goals and budget.

I'd love to go F/I but it doesnt quite seem like the $$$ is there right now, so I'm thinking for now just build a decent NA motor...do some stuff to the trans so it holds up for a little while and when money allows I will move to F/I. This truck will be my DD...

  4. Alright Guys, as most of you might know my LQ9 in the SSS got hydrolocked and I need a new motor. The shop I am dealing with has been very cooperative with trying to figure out what to build. As of now I do not know exactly what has failed in the stock motor. My insurance company is giving me $6k to put a new motor in my truck. What I'm hoping from you guys is what can I build or expect to build for this amount? I was thinking 408 or going F/I of some kind. I feel for $6k I should be able to get something half way decent besides just another stock LQ9. I need advice, plain and simple, I dont build motors, so labor would be a cost as well. I have been bouncing ideas off of the guy I'm dealing with as to what I want and what he thinks we should build and keep it within the budget. I do have a little extra $$$ to throw in, but I really should be keeping that for house stuff...:glare: I got this email from him this afternoon,

"Here is where I am at: basically stuck. I need you to answer some questions for me. How much extra are you willing to put into this project? Obviously a big chunk of money is coming from the insurance, but how much do we have to work with? How much HP do you want to try to achieve? It is hard to figure out where to head with this because we don't know what pieces are salvageable. At minimum we will need rods and pistons to revive your current motor shortblock. At worst, the block is junk too. If that is the case, what do you want to start with for a motor? We could get a salvage motor, stick new heads, intake, cam, exhaust, retune. We could buy a stroker shortblock and put your current heads, intake, etc. Some combination of the above. Do we buy a reman long block and stick a magnacharger on it? That might be the best bang for the buck! I'm just stuck because we don't have enough info. I'm not sure if you want 600hp and are willing to spend 10k, or if you want 450hp and will spend 2k. The more direction you can give me the better as it helps eliminate some of the variables."

I honestly thought I could get into something turn key that was fairly decent for $6-7k...but he's making it sound like its going to take $8k to get 450hp? I have already asked him to work up estimates on how much to bring back to stock, and then a 408 build to achieve around 450hp. A 376 LSX long block is around $6k...I thought it would be cheaper to build something instead of buying from GMPP.

So in short, what can I expect to get for around $6k...what would you knowledgeable motor heads recommend or do if you were in my position? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Its been over a week of not having my truck and its beyond getting old already.

  5. Got to agree, red is the fastest! When I was trying to figure out what color I wanted, my friend helped me out. He said "look in our parking lot here at work and tell me the first vehicle/s that stand out to you first" so I did and sure enough it was a red explorer and red 2500HD. Red stands out the most, especially Victory Red.

Which means it stands out more to the po-po as well...and also red vehicles have higher insurance rates! (or so I'm told)

  6. I'm with those guys do up a nice 408 and sorry/happy for your lose but why did you try the crossing in the first place? Was the depth of water deceiving to you guys?

Btw you did the right thing helping out the Titan owner.

I wasnt sure what the extent was of the damage at that point, and the road did look passable, like I said the water was only 10-12 inches deep and then got deep real fast...hindsight is 20/20 I just wanted to get home...Live and learn.

Anyone got any pointers on what a 408 build entails? Im a virgin when it comes to actually building motors, my guy I'm sure would have some idea, Ive looked at multiple build threads, including shadowsnipers and krambos but I doubt the cash flow will allow me to build to that extent. Keep in mind the insurance company will only cover bringing her back to stock...not a 408. The guy doing my work says he can get 450-500hp out of a LQ9 and hes in the process of coming up with a build and I should have it by Monday or Tuesday. I will post up what he comes up with so you guys can give me your opinions...

  7. Ya it sucks for sure, thanks for the words. The guy thinks I either bent or broke some connecting rods so it will be a brand new motor...I'll keep you guys posted as to what the build will entail. Wheatley, if your reading this I'm probably gonna need a retune! Hope to OT is slowin' down for ya Shuan, hasn't for us yet...be safe.

EDIT: Heres what Route 4 looks like at the base now...It was a 3 lane road.post-16159-089241100 1315032487_thumb.jpg

  8. Haven't been on in about a week or so except for the occasional check on the cell phone when I have a little down time, with a good reason...As you all know Hurricane Irene graced us with her presence and my area of Vermont got hit hard...real hard. I was in Maine the weekend of the 27th for my sisters wedding, and decided that I was going to try to beat the storm home so I left on Sunday at like 1000hrs. Weather was fine except drizzle until I hit the VT border, got off I-89 in Quechee to head up and over the mountains...and Woodstock was a mess, the Ottoquechee river was raging like I've never seen before with 100's of propane tanks ranging from 20 gal. to 200 gal. ripping by. I made it through the town of Woodstock, and then found that the road was completely gone...(see picture one, note propane tanks.) So I obviously turned around and headed back into town, took a right on to another road that I knew would get me home (or so I thought, RTE 106 for you NE'ers) and was traveling behind a Nissan Titan. We encountered about a foot of water on the road and we both kept on. Now in retrospect I should have just stayed put somewhere, but I had no idea what the extent of the damage was at this point and for all I knew Rte 4 was the only road gone. As we continued it was like a levy broke, the 1 ft of water went to over my hood in a flash, the Titan slammed his brakes, and I "blipped" my throttle as the water was enough brake for me and that was the end of the LQ9. The Titan also hydrolocked his motor and we helped each other safely retreat from the water. Luckily my buddy lived close by and we were able to actually push my truck out of the rushing water before it got swept away, and yes we helped the guy in the Titan as well. Got the truck towed to a shop that my LT. uses for his Jeep, the guy specializes in building bad ass off road vehicles as well as drag truck and tractors. He pulled the plugs and the motor wouldn't turn over at all, and you could hear pieces and parts dropping in the motor...He is going to be building me a motor, and overhauling the transmission. Insurance is going to cover the damage up to the amount that it would take to bring the truck back to the condition it was in before the water damage. Right now that estimate is at $6 grand. I'm currently waiting to hear back on what he thinks it will cost to build something in the 500hp range...if you guys have any ideas that would be great. Its kind of bittersweet, but the SSS will be back bigger and badder than she was. For shits and giggles the second picture is the road I live off, like 2 miles from my driveway. post-16159-052099700 1315026388_thumb.jpgpost-16159-054244900 1315026405_thumb.jpg

  9. Ryan I'm plenty smart enough to use the google tool bar and Ebay my problem is I don't want to pay that much for one... I found one on PT for 270.00 shipped with 5,000 miles on it waiting on a response now to send a paypal payment.

But it comes with a free T-shirt!!!!!!! :jester:
