  1. My trans was built by a buddy of mine. My truck has 30K supercharged miles on it. You will eventually break the output shaft. It was my fault the 2nd time money was tight and I put a stock output shaft in it....KABLAM. I haven't been running it that hard and don't race it any more. My trans has a TBTC, Full billet servos, zippy shift kit with oversized boost valve, etc. The original trans burnt the high gear clutches at 70K and since then 2 output shafts but no more clutches. I have had many trials and tribulations with the truck and I love it but it has cost me some money.

  2. It's been a while since I've hung out here and in the mean time I have broken 2 output shafts. I am tired of this crap so it's time to spring for a billet one. I have seen that PATC has them for $569 is that about as good as it gets or what? This time when my trans blew up it pretty much junked everything except the case, valve body, and front planetaries. I have a friend at the Chevy dealer looking for a 4L70 core to rob a few parts from. I haven't really been beating on my truck, I gave up racing it at the track but a transmission every 10K miles is ridiculous.

I guess my next question is if I put a billet output shaft in there what breaks next? I hope to get a late model core to put the better input drum/shaft in mine but what else is gonna fail? I am really considering yanking the Maggie off and saving it for my Chevelle when I get rolling on it. Later

  3. My truck was down for a month since I blew the trans. I got it back together and up and running but my Sirius no longer works. I checked the connections and I checked for codes. A bunch of body codes I'm guessing from where my battery went dead. (Left my Aeroforce gauge plugged it and radar detector) I did use a booster/starter to get it running and before you say it I think I may have cooked it with the booster. Any other ideas? Could my radio simply need reflashed?

  4. Finally up and running. Put my trans back in last night and all I had was 2nd and 3rd. Turns out my buddy who built it hadn't fully seated the 1-2 shift solenoid. I was under the truck at 6:30am this morning so I could drop the pan. That's when I found the solenoid not all the way plugged in. Drove about 150 miles today no problems, shifts great (still). It only cost me about $350 to fix it, BTW that is the third trans repair. #1 was 3-4 clutches(total rebuild) and #2 was a broken output shaft, reaction gear support, and front pump. So far at least I'm only about $500 deep in 2 trans rebuilds so I'm still under the $3500 FLT bar. Let me say that I believe their trans is definately worth it but I have other places my money needs to go right now. Later

  5. At this point I'm a little low on dough to shell out 3-4K on a new trans. I have no problem replacing them as I break em. Went over today and got my trans apart. Turns out it's not as bad as I though. I need a output shaft, front pump and a internal reaction gear support. Believe it or not everything else looks ok. Apparently when the output shaft broke it locked up and broke the pump too. I guess at least it kept it from pumping tons of junk thru the trans. The fluid was cherry red and no small pieces/parts were in the pan. Only the output shaft and a few chunks of it were inside and inside the pump the vanes were broken. I should be good to go again after $3-400 bucks (for now).

  6. Well I finally got around to pulling my trans and my trans guy called tonight. "What the F#*K did you do to this thing?" he asked. Anyhow he couldn't get it all the way apart yet (didn't try real hard) but he did say that so far I need a pump, output shaft and I'm sure some other stuff. I refuse to spend $3500 on a trans so anyone got a core I can buy? If not I guess a hardened output, pump, and probably some other $hit are in order if my case is still good and I can't find a core.

  7. It almost sounds like they cheaped out and didn't put any flex additive in the paint or used the wrong primer. Urethane stuff looks fine without it until the slightest bump then the paint will crack

Don't forget no one will screw you faster then family or friends

  8. That's the exact same mileage that I replaced an inner tie rod at...they are notorious for going bad quickly. Also when I put my spindles on around 40k the ball joints seemed a little loose for that low of miles. A third thing is at 75K I replaced a hub bearing. I didn't even flinch when my 2nd trans gernaded....Oh well.

  9. I'll be at Super Chevy for sure...I have to repair my transmission though. Something is broken inside it will roll forward in neutral but not backwards. Did you here me say UHOH? I have been working on my 70 Elcamino SS lately and hopwfully it'll be at SC. Sorry for the thread jack

  10. BTW... also wanted to say... a HUGE thank you to Brian (Hot Rod Truck) as he was a huge help on his end, and we actually have created a pretty decent friendship through this whole ordeal of mine...

also thanks to everyone who gave advice or tried to find out anything for me... in the end, the seller was just a LAZY MOFO... plain and simple...

i actually found out his last name about a month ago... "Greg Hillan"

you wouldnt believe how bashed this guy is on the internet on all kinds of forums and what not...

Brian (Hotrodtruck) is a good dude. I had the pleasure of hanging out with him last year at the Super Chevy show in Indy. I'm really glad to hear you got it straight. I really hate having to learn lessons about how you just can't trust people. I am a pretty trusting person and for the most part it has worked out fine. There are lots of assholes lurking out there just waiting to steal your money and e-bay seems to be chalk full of them. Look at it this way $150 was pretty cheap tuition in the "School of hard knocks". Later

  11. DON"T SAY THAT.

In all honesty, i firmly believe the life of your tranny is directly related to two things......one being driving style and the other is maintanance.

I completely agree, however I am sure I broke a hard part that more than likely could not have been saved no matter what. My driving style? Well it was a daily driver till recently and I can honestly say I don't hammer it all the time. The hard parts in the trans had 75K miles on them (RIP). Hopefully I'll only have a few hundred in fixing it. BTW I have changed the fluid 3 times in 60K miles and my rebuild had 15K on it. Seriously unless you drop $4K into a built trans a 4L65E won't live for long behind 500+ crank HP in a 6000lb vehicle. I am content to fix it every couple of years for $3-400 bucks a pop. I do see either a 80E or a 6 speed in my future.
