  1. The general consensus is that handheld programmers are not worth the money, not as waste of money, but not a very good bang for the buck.

Most get a custom tune, from Zippy, or Blackbear, or someone else. I have had 2 mail order tunes from Nelson Performance on 2 different trucks and I have been extremely happy with both.

  2. Going to be a pretty sick truck. Plus you'll always have the memories of doing the project with your dad. I've been hooked on these since Project Copperhead from Stacey David. Good luck with this beauty.

Yeah its always fun working on things with your father. This will be our second project together. We restored his original chevelle in the 90's. I hope to one day work on a project like this with my own son or daughter. My buddy who is doing the paint and body work is teaching his 10 year old son the tricks of the trade and his son is helping him out with my truck, which I think is pretty cool.

    Hey Dan,

I realize that saucing is a bit different without the racks laid out flat, but I've had good results saving space by rolling racks of Baby Backs. Rolling and pinning with skewers doesn't work as well with St. Louis or Spares.

I have never thought about rolling them up like that. Good idea

  4. Congrats on the new smoker Dan. Looks like that one ought to hold you for a whiole. Have you tried you ribs on it yet?

Not yet, I have yet to cook on the new grille since I just bought it yesterday, but im planning on using it this weekend since Im having a bunch of friends over for a BBQ. They make a rib rack for this new grille I have where you can put 8 full racks on the grille (vertically). However The way I cook my ribs, I cant put them vertically, but my dad says he can get 5 racks on his Grille (Same as my new one), vs only 2 racks on my old one.

How much shipped on the old one. Lol. That will be expensive.

Can't wait to see what you cook on the new smoker!!!

I bet it would be pretty expensive. I was looking on Amazon and they sell the next step up from my new one ( 2 steps up from my old one) and they charge $500 for shipping. Ouch

  5. Well I just picked up another Trager this afternoon. This is the one I should have bought originally. Its much bigger, it has the ability to add a cold smoker attachement, plus it has a way to easily dump the pellets out when you want to switch to a different wood. Looks like I need to sell my older one. I will be able to do a lot more smoking with this, and will be able to cook my specialty ribs for all my friends

  6. I guess I should share some of the things I have smoked over the last couple weeks:

Buffalo Chicken Legs- Just marinated in buffalo sauce and a tiny bit of oil, then cooked with the sauce on

Pulled Pork- This did not come out as well as I hoped, I decided to use a different rub which was a mistake

I smoked a Corned Beef the other day.Turned out great! After a couple ours getting smoke, it was then basted in a Apricot BBQ sauce mixed with a little dijon, then covered and left too cook in its own juices.

  7. Great to see that your project is still coming ahead.

Yeah its getting there. I told my buddy to take his time. He did not do much work this winter because he did not have heat in his shop, then his wife gave birith, and immediately she had to have surgery. So one thing after another. He is trying to bust it out this summer. So hopefully it will be done fairly soon.

  8. Well my buddy has started making more progress on the truck. He told me that the bed is super straight which is very rare I guess. But it does have a ton of holes so its kinda a pain to work on but hes starting to work super hard on it so he can get it done.

In the lase picture you can see his 68 he has been working on since he was a kid. Hes got it bagged and made it so it can be completley dropped to the ground. Pretty badass, he just never has time to work on his own project because he is always doing projects for someone else.

  9. I would pass buying from LMC all those place do is buy from a dealer and mark up. See if you can find someone local who will make you a deal.... If not try a website like GMparts direct or similar.

Wow your right. I use to think LMC was usualy cheaper, but they are selling brake ducts for $270 each and GMparts direct has them for $176

  10. Ok so this is about my HD, but I figured this was still the best section to ask this question.

So its been about 1 year since I changed the oil in my truck. I used Royal Purple Synthetic and a K&N Filter. I have only put 4k miles on my truck since the oil change, and only 1k since November.

Normally i change my oil every 5k miles, and I use to average 10-12k miles a year so I would change my oil about twice a year. I have never had to deal with issue before. The oil still looks very clean with just a tiny bit of dirt, but far from being dark.

I know with regular petroleum based oil can expire an you should change your oil frequently, but what about full synthetic? especially a high end synthetic like Royal Purple?

What do you guys do that don't put many miles on your truck? If you use synthetic do you change it based on a time limit? or do you just wait until you hit 5k miles. If you were in my shoes would you change your oil now, or wait until I hit 5k (which could be another 6 months)?

  11. Yep like others have said. A custom tune is the way to go. It is a very simple process in will net you much better gains than a hand held programmer.

I have had 2 different vehicles with tunes from Nelson Performance and i could not be happier.
