Recommended Octane for SSS

I just bought my '06 SSS. Well my wife did, since I am deployed. Well she says that it is getting horrible Gas Mileage (11 MPG). I asked her what fuel she put in it...and of cours she responds with Regular. From reading the website I was under the impression that the LQ9 required 91 Octane minimum. I decided to do some research and the Chevy Site is claiming 87 Octane. Anyone have any thoughts on this?? It just doesn't seem right to me. Maybe a typo??

I wasn't planning on getting great gas mileage, but is this what I should expect from a 2WD SSS?? Thanks for the help!!

The answer should be right in your owners manual.

For all vehicles, except those with the 6.0L V8 engine (VIN Code N), use regular unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 87 or higher. If the octane rating is less than 87, you may notice an audible knocking noise when you drive, commonly referred to as spark knock. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible. If you are using gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher and you hear heavy knocking, your engine needs service.

If your vehicle has the 6.0L V8 engine (VIN Code N), use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. You may also use regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicle's acceleration may be slightly reduced, and you may notice a slight audible knocking noise, commonly referred to as spark knock. If the octane is less than 87, you may notice a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise, you might damage your engine. If you are using gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher and you hear heavy knocking, your engine needs service.

your wife has a heavy foot

This may very well be true!!!

Zippy,

Thanks for the info. I sense a bit of "STUPID NEW GUY" in your reply. I looked up the manual online (since I am deployed and never actually seen my new baby or the manual in person). I guess the website is just screwed up because it lists the LQ4 and the LQ9 seperately and they are both listed as recommending the 87 Octane.

Onto bigger and better things. I may be in contact with you once I get home for a custom tune. Thanks again.

 No I think it is people resist that it that premium, get on here and do the same as you read one spot that says its ok and then do it all the time. Zippy is pointing you to the section of the manual that clears up the confusion. The SSS takes premium.

be safe :flag:

I wasn't trying make it seem that way, but this almost exact same post comes up about once every other month or so. It's amazing how many didn't know about the fuel requirements at the purchase. Some have even had the salesman tell them to just run 87 octane because the salesman didn't know.

I was well aware, and prepared to run 93 octane in this truck. I always ran 93 in my R/C 5.3L. Mainly due to an 89 tune from Hypertech that caused a spark knock when I ran on 89 (NEVER AGAIN). :banghead: I was just curious due to the fact that the website says they recommend 87 Octane in the LQ9. Just didn't seem right!!

I will definitely be in contact for a tune once I get closer to coming home. I will PM you and find out all the details. Thanks Zippy!!

87 works fine but the PCM reduces timing much faster then it adds it back when you run 91+ takes me about 2 tanks of 93 to get my power back. why i even bother putting in 87 when it's $5 bucks a tank difference is beyond me.

it's that spur of the moment holly f $3.07 a gallon moments that make me fill up with 87 since 93 sits at 3.27

Use the highest octane you can find and you'll be ok. Now you can use 87 octane but you better not floor it while using it. This could be very bad news for your motor ;) As for the PCM knowing the difference between the fuels, I'm not sure on that one. I once had an SVO that actually had a fuel select switch on it. You could flip the switch for 87 ocatne which would cut the boost down from 15lbs to 10lbs and reduce the timming. It was one of the fist thyings I disconnected...15lbs of boost sucks on a 4cl and every red light was a race waiting to happen :driving:
