My oddyssey with the grinding noise in front end

Recommended Posts

Well just took truck in for the fourth time to fix that rotational grinding noise. First time they told me it is normal. Second time they replaced the power steering pump even though we all know it isn't in the steering. Third time they replaced the side bearings and now the fouth time after a call to Chevrolet customer service they tell me it is normal. They also said that there are many Cadillacs, GMC's and our trucks being brought in with this complaint but still it is normal. I am not very happy as the noise on my truck is very loud. Should be easy to sell this thing with it sounding like it is falling apart in low speed turns. Oh well.

I took mine back to have a GM rep look at it. When I got there the GM rep was a manager for the service departments in the area. This guy was dumb as dirt. He had no clue what a Silverado SS was. He kept asking me if the noise went away when I took it out of four wheel drive. I had to keep explaining to him that it was all wheel drive. He still continued asking me where the button was for the four wheel drive. So I took him for a ride and he heard the noise. I explained to him this site and how others are having the same problem. He then stated it was normal. He did make the mistake of calling the noise, "gear binding." I then asked him how gear binding is normal and not harming the truck. I explaind to him that the truck is the same driveline as an escallade and my mother has one and it does not make the sound. He stated that Cadiliac takes the extra time to make sure eveything is working correctly. This upset me very much. He stated that he was going to talk to someone else and get back to me. Needless to say he never called me back. So I called GM customer care back and complained some more. I guess I will have to wait to see what happens.

Well just took truck in for the fourth time to fix that rotational grinding noise.  ....

What exactly does it sound like and is it loud? I mean is it a rotational sound like a disc brake pad's wear indicator rubbing the rotor? Is it that kind of sound or something else?

Since mine is a Z71 with the push button thang, and I don't have any weird noises, makes me wonder if the noise is unique to the AWD.

I did not start to hear it until around 1000 miles.  At first it sounded like a tire rubbing.  The noise is now so loud I can hear it over my radio.

Congrats on your new ride

Many of us have the same problem(GM says there is no problem), the more people that complain them maybe they will do something and bring out a TSB to address problem.

Bring it to your dealer, talk to Service Manager ensure tha he documents it and reports yours too to the DSM who in turn who is supposed to report it to GM HQ.

(In Theory)

Then Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait...

Right now GM's address is :( return to sender.

Good luck :shakehead:

there has been discussion of this in my monthly training i take a few times recently. unfortunatly, this has has been deamed normal since all of them for the most part are doing it. the regular trucks do it also, but only when in 4wd or auto-trak is active. with the ss being awd, it gets much more wear in the driveline and also builds up much more heat which will only worsen the condition. my previous job used to be quality control at the dealer i work for and stuff like this was a constant problem on working for a fix and also knowing if they all really did it or not. i don't expect a fix anytime soon on the condition though.

Hey ho how do Zippy,

Agree with you mon ami, I don't expect fix anytime soon either but why don't other brands make noise.

I expected the It's Normal routine from FORD, but was definitely not expecting this from GM.

Normal :nonod:

My friend drives the Sh  t out of is Subaru AWD WRX,another friends Buick Rendez Vous AWD both silent as mouse.

Even my neighbour's 2003 1500 Ram Hemi in full mode 4X4 makes no noise at all.

I would have expected noise from a 4 X 4 but all other AWD out there do not make noise and if they did no one would buy them, North Americans are picky shoppers.

Message to GM HQ, It is a defect if problem arises after a few thousand kilometers are driven. If it were normal all would have problem, but only around 57 to 75% of owners have the noise.

GM team most likely :nono: knew that it was going to be noisy, rushed the truck to market and rather than fix the problem decided to camouflage :smash: it with a lubricant additive that would mask the noise until truck was sold and then they could play the Normal Noise game.

I don't think I am too far off from the thruth.

In my opinion Proper  Action should be for the 75 percent or so that have this problem pursue GM into coming up with a fix and it's beginning to smell like a redesigned transfer case replacement to those with problems.

unfortunatly, what is termed normal means that all of that model does it. i don't think it should make a bit of noise, hell this is 2004 and we can't get a quiet driveline? either way, that's how gm comes up with it being normal, do all of that model truck do it, if yes than it's normal, not that it's right, but normal.

Since I first posted this I have done a little research on my own. I have driven 2 Cadillacs and a Denali pickup from 3 different dealerships. None of these vehicles made the noise. I then drove another SS and it did make the noise although this vehicle was not new like the other three. Mine started at about 5000 miles. My truck now has 17000 miles and I gotta tell you this noise is really starting to piss me off. It is very loud in my truck. Well, I then took my truck to the local GMC/Cadillac dealer and the GMC specialist drove with me in the truck and said there is definitely something there and no they aren't aware of any problem in the GMC's or the Cadillacs. I asked him if they could fix it under warranty and his service manager said no, only under an emegency situation. So my Chevy dealer tells me that alot of vehicles have this problem, but across the street at GMC, they have had none. Come on GM and fix this.

Bill.
