Synthetic oil

Recommended Posts

So would that be like installing a compressor line to the spark plug inlet and holding pressure (like in the cam swat tutorial) and seeing if it can maintain a certain pressure????? :uhoh:

I think that is the intention.

Smithl3,Oil consumption and cylinder leakage doesn't always go hand in hand.

A cylinder that has an oil consumption problem can show good cranking compression,,maybe even higher than the other healthy cylinders in the same engine due to the oil sealing the rings and valves.

Do an old fashion cranking compression test. When you pull each spark plug out check it for signs of oil.

If one or more cylinders are low (20lbs or more) then do a leak down test to determine if the rings or the valves are leaking.

Note;when preforming a leakdown be sure to secure the crankshaft at or near TDC of the cylinder your testing. After you have applied 100+ lbs of air on that cylinder carefully rock the crankshaft a few degrees.(very carefully)

This allows the top ring to seat on the top ring land so you get an accurate reading. In my experience the air pressure alone will not seat the top ring.

But you only have to slightly move the piston / crankshaft.

A healthy cylinder will be leaking 11 to 14 % and when the crankshaft is rocked,"pop" the leakage will drop to,say,,2%.Or what ever the actual leakage is for the engine being tested.

If the valves are leaking you can hear it in the intake or exhaust.

Take a look in the area of your PCV valve,if there is excessive oil in that area meaning the engine is "blowing oil" this is an indication the engine has a compression seal problem in a cylinder,ie;cracked piston, scared cylinder wall, broken or bad top ring.

You mentioned smoke after a period of idling. This very well could have been caused by fuel washing down the cylinders and wareing out the oil rings or the engine ingesting dirt.(a dusted engine)

Does your engine have a warrenty?

Good luck and keep us posted.
