  1. This is a good idea, and luckily it is one that has been proven multiple times over.....243 heads with a valve job is what I was told to do.
  2. Do the deed man. Be glad the dealer isnt giving you auction value. I thought about trading mine in and they quoted me 10k as that is what they could get for a similiar truck at auction. They thought I was naive, but I knew they were just seeing what a LT crewcab with a 5.3 would get at auction. The nada on it was 18000 private party and 14500 trade in. I told them to shove it. You would probably be happy with the tahoe, plus you could upgrade it just like you would your single cab. Rare, something you love, and a gmt800 platform.....sounds like a great package of benefits!
  3. I had for sale signs on mine for about a month. My wife reminded me of why I bought it in the first place (a perfect project truck) and she told me to get something for it and I did...you just need to start turning wrenches on it man..and like said above, it will do the talking. Diesels are easy, and expensive, they have something very similiar to a corvette tax. I wanted one then started weighing the costs to maintain and upgrade and changed my mind. I looked at the new 5.0 mustangs because of their hp and I realized that even though I tow nothing, I am still a truck guy and wouldnt have been happy. Make it a point to give that truck some love and some new parts and you will renew the vigor
  4. I cant trust my avg mpg. I let my truck warm up for several minutes everytime I drive it, and my avg commute is around 2-12 miles so I ALWAYS get horrible fuel mileage, but when I do put it on the highway (rarely), my crew cab gets around 19.5-20 mpg if I take it easy and keep it at or a lil under 70. I tested it the other day with a 30 mile trip on our interstate loop after I put the headerson and it was at 19 by the time I pulled back into town...my tune has a lit to do with my city mileage being terrible because the shift points are raised some. Once heads and cam and stall go in I am sure it will suffer some. Before I got retuned the other day after the headers my mpgs had dropped to 10.
  5. How much did it cost to have them painted? I have a crew cab with silver birch buckets but the handles are chrome, I want to get the handles and mirror caps painted to match, just wasnt sure how much they would charge.
  6. Key to oiled filters is letting them completely dry after washing...that way you can oil them the same way they are oiled from the manufacturer. Simply go with a couple of decent passes on bottom and top and let it sit. The oil will wick its way through the whole filter and disperse properly. Just give it time to wick through and you can reinstall it without worrying a bout it being overoiled.
  7. When another member called about installing a Magnuson, the statement was made that it would only be warrantied if the motor was stock, they build the blowers and spec them based on stock valvetrain and rotating assembly. No upgrades needed, he can install it himself because it is essentially swapping one intake for another, if he gets a complete kit, it is possible that it will come with the flash pack as well so for 4k he could get a used maggie complete with nothing more than his time needed to install it and put the tune on it. The sugested mods are great power mods, but are not mods that should be considered for his application. Bottom line, he wants power, low end torque for pulling and fuel mileage that stays the same or better, positive displacement supercharger is the right way to go.
  8. Pretty much, broke a socket tightening the band clamps lol. I still might pull the clamps and spray them, i cant hear any leaks but i can feel little puffs of air from two of them so...
  9. Lol...or this...i could see telling my wife,"but baby, i only have 9.5 to 1 compression, i hate to say it but I think I am gonna have to get a tvs2300, or I am afraid of what might happen if I dont..." She would have a blank stare and bam, purchase would have been justified and the reason would still be flying over her head.
  10. Lol, yet another post gone wild. The guy is at altitude, he needs power to pull a boat, he wants it to have extra pep, and specifically says doesnt want worse gas mileage. Why would suggesting a larger cam, a higher stall or anything else other than a supercharger make sense? Centrifugal superchargers are great but dont hit boost at low rpms, turbos are the same, so they arent as viable of an option. Nitrous is useless as a power adder if the power is needed for pulling. RV cams are decent torque cams, but dont expect a huge performance gain from them. Maggies are MADE for and as such are advertised for pulling applications (and fun) and can net good mileage as well. If you can find a complete kit, it should have upgraded injectors already, and the perks of maggies are that they are freakin bolt on superchargers, so he could put it in himself and not have to pay anyone to do it. So he can get really close to 4k in the purchase of a used maggie, which if he looks hard enough he should be able to find one with low miles. It is literally the best solution for the budget and requirements.
  11. Gone for a day and it blew up in here lol. Sprayed, and 2bfast know what they are talking about. Like stated previousely they can be blunt about things, so a thick skin is good lol. The heads on your truck will flow, and even better with a little work. I like the idea of L92s, but in a n/a situation, they can tally up a pretty large bill when swapping to them. Since you are going the boost route, 317s will be good, if you do some research you see guys with 6.0 motors buying 5.3 heads for compression bump when going all motor and you see guys that put the boost to their motors running 317s so the compression doesnt get too high and end up having to run race fuel just to prevent detonation. Remember, you are planning a build based around a streetable truck, and you can definately make a beast running your heads, and for less expense. Not being cheap, just knowing where your focus needs to be with the power source you choose. A valve job, and valvetrain upgrades based on cam and blower will net loads of reliable and streetable hp. The upgrades to your heads, including a cam would probably cost the same amount you are gonna pay for the L92 heads. Try doing like I said and sprayed99 did for you in that earlier post, and list out all the parts you need so you can get a grasp on what costs are incurred on each head choice. A Cam, your heads (with work), a maggie, the 4L80 and parts to mesh it with awd set up, definately upgrading the fuel delivery and if there is anything left over better brakes, and you will be one happy sss owner with a fast, reliable, respectable truck. Start pricing before you do anything, get machine shop quotes, plugging in a tranny isnt bad, watched a guy do it the other day in 20 minutes lol, not sure about driveshafts, and the awd adapter stuff, so budget that in, you can do brakes, and fuel pump. You can do your head install, let machine shop set your springs in, lifters and lifter trays are easy to do since the heads will be off. Milling 317s a little shouldnt hurt with ptv as long as your blower cam isnt outrageous. And as a side note, so long as you got over 2bfast messing with you a little bit, he is a good source on what you are wanting to do. Him and sprayed built a beautiful sss with a LOT of work and money placed under the hood. Sprayed99 is really knowledgable on cams and all things motor and actually builds hotrods for a living, and sinr98 knows a ton about these trucks as well. JC03ss has gotten really involved in his truck as well...the list goes on, just try to have a light heart and you will get everything you need to know, so long as you are willing to do the footwork and spend as much time researching.
  12. Hey, should have seen how long it took me to figure out how to post pictures to begin with lol
  13. Yes in a sense, just remember, cams come with some requirements. Valvetrains need to be upgraded, or at least the springs and rods and it wouldnt hurt to do a trunion upgrade. This is all stuff you can do with the motor in the truck. You could get some really good gains from cam/blower combo, so dont think you are cheaping out, it is a perfectly good upgrade, and the 80 is a great tranny, its important to note that some mods will need to be done for your awd setup...i am not awd so ask people here what needs to be done to make it work. Prochargers are great superchargers too, I would suggest researching the pros and cons of each and make a choice based on what you are looking to get out of it.
  14. If he does i hope it falls down my chimney lol
  15. As said above, wether you go with L92s, or get a little work done to your 317s, the maggie you order will need to match. The supercharger takes the place of your intake manifold, it is essentially a mechanized intake manifold, so it will need to match your heads intake port. And brakes are a great upgrade if you can afford to get them as well. Just make sure you order the right one, they will carry both rectangular port maggies and cathedral port maggies.
  16. A used supercharger maybe? More power, forced induction is great for higher altitudes, and could result in better mpgs.
  17. Call me Phil, the PC police can kiss my...lol
  18. Lol...gotta make Gumbo tommorrow for the fam so hopefully i dont burn the house down lol
  19. Awesome man...the wife hasnt had a cig in over a month..really proud of her. Way to go on working on getting another smoker to stop! Truck is lookin good man
  20. Merry Christmas to all of you and your families. Heres hoping Santa is good to your kids, and your trucks!
  21. I guess what I am having trouble with is how an argument can be made that a mass produced product that is application specific is of higher quality than one-off custom work. If this was the case, the mafia would have shopped at Mens Warehouse, and told the tailors to go screw themselves. A craftsman capable of creating something that is applied to one thing at a time will always be in demand. Ikea does a lot of business, but there is never a shortage of people hiring cabinet makers that can put better quality, and better fit and finish to top it off. Wether the pipes are single mandrel bent tubes, or a series of mandrel bent pieces doesn't matter if the welds are done perfectly. A custom set will have more detail work done on the collecters, a hell of a lot more QA done during the process, and will spare no expense to achieve maximum flow. As a person in a field that holds utmost importance on consistency and accuracy, I can see how you would hold a product made in a jig and built the same, day in and out with such high regard. Hell I agree that AR headers are top notch, would have picked them up if I could have afforded them. But there is a very good reason people pay 2 to 3 xs the money for a set of custom headers. There are advantages and certain needs that can be met with them. Primary length, collector length, flange thickness and primary diameter, as well as collector style are all contributing factors. Some people will require more involved exhaust tuning to match their performance needs, and this is where the custom header build exceeds the off-the-shelf variants. Crack open a set of AR headers and tell me if the collectors begin to look like these pieces inside.... http://www.stainlessheaders.com/mergecollectors.
  22. Lol, when you see a stock motor with a maggie on it, there is probably some form of trailer behind it. I would say over 75% of aftermarket superchargers on motors have supporting mods to either handle the power better, or improve the power delivery.
  23. ^^^^see, here is one of the guys on here that has been there and done that so to speak that I was telling you about. Good part about this advice is you save money by sticking with upgrading what you have, and that money could go towards something else. Maybe some suspension upgrades or differential upgrades
  24. Have a merry Christmas Danny! Hope the bathroom turned out great and the misses is happy with it!
